POSITION TITLE: Orientation Leader (Summer 2024)
Department: New Student Programs (NSP)
Reports to: Alie Drew, Director of New Student Programs
The Orientation Leader position for the Office of New Student Programs at Rhode Island College is a Spring 2024 appointment.
Under the supervision of the Orientation staff, this position will provide an array of experiences including: planning and implementation of Summer and Spring orientation programs, group facilitation, peer education, and developing the knowledge necessary to become a resource for incoming students and their families.
Specific Duties:
- Assist in the planning and implementation of Summer Orientation for new first-year and transfer students and their families
- Act as a resource through sharing knowledge of RIC, its programs, and services
- Aid new students in their transition to RIC through communication, support, and knowledge
- Create and facilitate group activities, conversations, workshops, and meetings
- Partner with and assist RIC staff, faculty, and administration throughout training and Orientation sessions
- Serve as a support system and sounding board for fellow Orientation Leaders on the team
- Represent the College, the office of New Student Programs, and the Orientation team professionally and responsibly throughout the programs and beyond
- Other duties as assigned

- Be a team player and have the ability to work well in groups
- Demonstrate knowledge of Rhode Island College, and its resources
- Practice excellent communication skills for interpersonal, small group, and large group settings, and be responsive and attentive to communication from NSP and fellow team members
- Maintain a strong sense of responsibility and self-advocacy
- Serve as a positive role model and leader for undergraduate students
- Be highly motivated and enthusiastic
- Practice flexibility and adaptability
- Good sense of humor preferred and welcomed
Required Conditions:
- Completed a minimum of 24 credit hours at RIC (or 1 semester if transfer)
- Be in good academic and judicial standing
- Must maintain a minumum 2.7 cumulative GPA throughout their term of appointment (through Spring 2025)
Compensation & Benefits:
- Stipend to be paid at the end of each Orientation Month
- Room and meal plan during entirety of active program and training dates (see specific dates outlined)
Appointment Date: April 2024
Decisions will be sent out in April and a final schedule of training and sessions will be outlined in your offer letter after the selection process has closed. We plan to meet up as a team later in the spring semester based on the team's availability.

POSITION TITLE: RIC-100 Peer Mentor (Fall 2024)
Department: New Student Programs (NSP)
Reports to: Alie Drew, Director of New Student Programs
FY Peer Mentors serve as an important resource for first-year students beginning with the #NewAnchor welcome experience through RIC 100 First Year Experience, which is a new required fall course. Mentors, along with the class instructor, will actively connect with an assigned group of new students during the fall semester through a variety of experiences designed to enhance and support active participation, a sense of belonging, and student success. Responsibilities:
- Serve as a positive role model, advocate, and resource for new students at Welcome Weekend and RIC 100 throughout the fall semester
- Assist the instructor of the assigned RIC 100 section to facilitate participation, communication, and support as needed
- Be registered for COLL 251 Peer Mentor Practicum (2cr)
- Communicate regularly with assigned first-year students (online and in person) through one-on-one and group meetings
- Facilitate and encourage attendance to all FYE programs
- Participate in all peer mentor trainings, meetings, programs, and activities
- Educate new students about various resources and student services available at the college
- Connect students to Learning for Life’s network of support when appropriate
- Complete all required data and record‐keeping for students served
- Communicate regularly with the Office of New Student Programs
Training Requirements:
- Participate in both spring training sessions and training prior to the start of the fall semester.
- Be available to support FYE programming
- Take Peer Mentor Practicum Course in Fall Semester (Wed 1:00-1:40 pm)
Qualifications:
- Be a rising sophomore, junior, or senior in good academic standing (minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0)
- Be in good student conduct standing
- Must be available on Wednesdays/(or possibly Friday) from 12:00 p.m. – 12:50 p.m. (and/or during other selected class time, hybrid, evening, etc.)
- Must be available for training sessions and Welcome Week Activities in August and Anchors Away Day on Saturday, August 24, 2023
- Commit to being enrolled at RIC through the fall and spring semesters
- Demonstrate strong interpersonal and communication skills and leadership potential
- Be self-motivated with a positive attitude
- Strong respect and desire to work with and support a diverse and inclusive community
- Ability to work independently and as part of the team of FY Peer Mentors
- Willingness to collaborate with campus partners
