Dear (Elected Official)
Climate change is here, it’s not going away, and workers and working families are the first to suffer its impacts. That’s why I’m joining with the Jewish Labor Committee and Make the Road New Jersey to call on you to pass a workplace heat standard to protect workers from extreme heat as temperatures rise year after year.
2025 is predicted to be the second hottest year ever on record, and New Jersey is the third-fastest warming state in the whole country. The state’s own Interagency Council on Climate Resilience says that, “New Jersey worker safety protections against extreme heat are inadequate to protect the most vulnerable and highly exposed workers.” Lacking federal protections, it is up to the legislature to act.
Since December 2023, two heat standard bills, A3521/S2422 and A5022/S3884, have been introduced for the legislature to consider. It seems in both situations that legislators that we count on to support workers have expressed reservations about those bills, but have not engaged in finding solutions.
I call on you to engage your colleagues and work towards SOLUTIONS to protect workers from extreme heat before another worker’s life is ended or permanently altered from entirely preventable heat exhaustion.
DELAY IS DEADLY! PROTECT WORKERS FROM EXTREME HEAT EXPOSURE NOW!
Sincerely,
(Your Name)
