Clergy Continuing Education Funding
Based on the event details you have selected, applying for Clergy Continuing Education Funding is the most appropriate.
This funding comes from local congregations through the Ministerial Education Fund apportionment. Applications are received and awarded monthly, according to the limits set forth in the “Guidelines for Education and Continuing Formation”. Additional details regarding standards for CEU credit, accountability, and reporting can be found in these guidelines. (www.vaumc.org/ClergyContinuingEducation)
Clergy Development Grant Funding
Based on the event or development opportunity you have selected, applying for a Clergy Development Grant is the most appropriate.
Grant funding comes from local congregations through the Ministerial Education Fund apportionment. Applications are received and reviewed quarterly (January, April, July, October). Grants are awarded to cover a portion of the cost of registration, lodging, and meals. Participants contribute their travel costs, books, time, and full participation in the event.
Learning ExperiencesThe Clergy Development Committee selects and publishes a listing of suggested Learning Experiences with qualified leadership; however, they recognize that such a list is not comprehensive. Applicants are welcome to apply for a grant toward other learning experiences by submitting additional information with their application. In requesting consideration of a new learning experience, refer to the Virginia Conference Characteristics of Effective Clergy which outline the expectations for effectiveness in ministry.
Learning experiences must meet one or more of the following criteria:
• Promote servant leadership and spiritual growth
• Encourage theological reflection
• Encourage personal growth and self-awareness
• Strengthen skills applicable for ministry.
In awarding grants, primary consideration will be given to applicants with special identified needs and applicants who are at critical points in ministry (for example, appointment changes, life changes, potential for exemplary leadership). The application and selection process will be confidential. Funding will vary depending on cost of learning experiences, strength of application, number of other applications and availability of funds.
Applications are received and reviewed quarterly. Deadlines are January 1, April 1, July 1, and October 1 with notification by the end of the same month.
Funding will be made payable to the sponsoring agency or applicant, as appropriate, and participation in the approved learning experience must begin within six months of committee approval.
Registering for the event with the sponsoring agency is the responsibility of the applicant. You may choose to wait to register until funding has been approved to be sure of what costs you may need to bear. Lodging and meals are reimbursed with a maximum per diem allowed.
