Choose one workshop below:
These Waters Run Deep: (TWRD) aims to utilize the healing power of all art forms to raise awareness around everything having to do with birthing life, both in a figurative and literal sense. This project embodies a strong feminine energy and seeks to bring balance to a society and world still operating from a patriarchal ideology.
Women and Performance Art Workshop: In this workshop, participants will immerse themselves in the world of Performance art by learning about major Performance women artists like Yoko Ono, Ana Mendieta, Lorna Simpson and Shirin Neshat. Students will acquire the ‘Artist Toolkit,’ a set of skills, techniques and ideas on Performance art. Students will create art by using their physical presence (body, voice, movement, space and time), by using video.
F.A.S.T. (Female Alternative Street Tactics): The F.A.S.T. program prepares a woman for all kinds of attacks. Not only giving women street smarts, but also giving them quick and efficient self defense moves that can possibly save their lives.
"Reproductive Rights in Communities of Color: Why Black and Latina Women are at High Risk": Inspired by Melissa Harris-Perry's presentation at Planned Parenthood's "Embracing Your Promise: A New Era of Opportunity" this workshop focuses on the question "Why Black and Latina women are at 'High Risk?'". Young women from the WOMEN's group (Where Our Minds Empower Needs) explore what "Racial Shame" means and how it affects them as they grow and explore political and sexual identities.
ACTION - Healthy Relationships: Not all of us are lucky enough to have had personal examples of healthy relationships growing up; this affects thousands of young people as they embark on relationships of their own. Lack of examples and lack of role modeling can lead to unsafe behaviors which can turn into a vicious cycle. In this workshop, young leaders from the teen activist group ACTION (Activist Coming To Inform Our Neighborhood) explore what it means to be in a Healthy Relationship.
"The Elusive O" - Female Orgasm: Several components that are essential to a holistic approach to women’s sexual health will be addressed. Firstly, many women are unaware of the health benefits of orgasm. This is particularly unfortunate because as women, it is incredibly important that we know what’s going on in our own bodies! Secondly, the notion of “when he’s done, it’s done” in heterosexual relationships is one that must be challenged in order to fully realize women’s empowerment. Lastly, there is a significant amount of shame around women’s sexual experiences, ranging from masturbation to understanding what arouses us and being able to ask for it. This workshop is intended to address some of these issues and hopefully, to allow the participants to walk away feeling more informed and empowered to take more control of their sexual lives.
