  • Jeffrey Duncan-Andrade, Ph.D., is Assistant Professor of Raza Studies and Education Administration and Interdisciplinary Studies at San Francisco State University. In addition to these duties, he continues as a high school teacher in East Oakland where he teaches English
  • Drawing from Tupac Shakur’s powerful metaphor of the rose that grows from concrete, as well as research in fields such as public health, social epidemiology, and psychology, Duncan-Andrade explores the concept of hope as essential for developing effective urban classroom practice. Through the voices of young people and their teachers, and the invocation of powerful metaphor and imagery, Duncan-Andrade proclaims critical hope’s significance for an education that relieves undeserved suffering in communities.
