Prime Minister
WEN Jiabao Guojia Zongli
Your Excellency,
I call on you to order the immediate and unconditional release of Tan Zuoren, who was detained on the 28th March 2009 because he had intended to publish sensitive information about the 2008 Sichuan earthquake, namely the poor structural construction of schools that collapsed, burying the school children under them.
Four days after the earthquake, on 16 May 2008four, Jiang Weixin, Minister of Housing and Urban-Rural Development promised that an investigation would be held and those responsible for unsafe school buildings would be punished. On 26 May 2008, theMinistry of Education spokesperson, Wang Xuming reiterated at a press conference the promise to severely punish the offenders.
Instead, those who try to do an independent investigation, like Tan Zuoren, or those who provide counsel to the parents of the children, such as Huang Qi, are harassed, detained and condemned to prison under vague accusations such as “inciting subversion of state power”.
This is a scandal in a country that reaffirms to be a state of law. It is in your hands Excellency, to put an end to such a situation, ordering the release of Tan Zuoren, Huang Qi and others that work for justice to be done to Sichuan earthquake survivors.
Yours sincerely,
