• Hi to past students and those of you new to this site. After learning about dementia and the benefit of learning the piano in a group, that is all I do now! My students are over 50, several in their 90's. I have added a specialty, after 18 months working exclusively with older adults. Now my students are those who are looking to potentially prevent the onset of symptoms, even forever, of dementia of certain types, including Alzheimer's disease. We should try to do everything we can to optimize our brain health, which is part of an overall lifestyle of wellness. Our heart health affects our brain always. I recommend reading an article called "The Six Dimensions of Wellness." Learning a musical instrument can bring more than just superior intellectual stimulation to you, even as fun as it is! Combined with simple ways of tweaking one's lifestyle to include these levels of wellness, learning a musical instrument is capable of "neurogenesis" or stimulating new brain cells to grow and take the place of those that are ineffective. Alzheimer's is about ineffective brain cells. I have set aside everything to travel to retirement communities and teach group piano and now private piano. These private piano lessons exclusively for people experiencing early stage memory loss. September 2015 Update: November 2015. I will be launching HealthRhythms in February 2016. This is a program which includes those with and without any level of memory loss. It is especially wonderful for residents of retirement communities to bond with each other. I have noticed that, in all of the communities where I teach as well as confessions of many residents, bonding with each other is rare. This breaks my heart! Call me about a preview for you to see if this is a fit.
