Chicago Art Department’s Studio Residency Program is a subsidized initiative that aims to support 12-month growth opportunities for artists. As part of the application process, artists are asked to identify goals for their practice, strategies for intention and engagement, and plans for exhibitions and public events. At the end of each term, Resident Artists revisit goals to identify areas of growth while defining next steps for their practice.
Requirements for Resident Artists
1) To develop new works through 12 months of studio practice.
2) To show new works in exhibitions, and interact with a public audience.
3) To participate in monthly meetings and critical discussions.
WHY BECOME A RESIDENT AT CAD?
Residents are welcomed into a community of civically-focused artists all working toward creating a more equitable Chicago.
Residents have the opportunity to propose exhibitions and public programs for our two gallery spaces and shared community areas.
CAD’s Spring Studio Visiting Program invites a dynamic cohort of arts professionals from Chicago and beyond for 1-on-1 studio visits with Residents. The program begins in February and runs through May.
Residents participate in monthly meetings and receive peer-to-peer feedback on work development.
CAD brings the public to you through our monthly 2nd Fridays, 1st Look, Open Studio Events (Aug + November), and CAD MRKTs which are intended to support artists who are also makers.
We are a community of communities and as such we are always involved in the greater arts community of Chicago, collaborating with other galleries on resident exhibitions, organizing field trips, educational workshops, and so much more!
Residents get a front row seat to all the incredible exhibitions and experiences hosted at CAD.
24/7 studio access and subsidized residency fees ranging from $250-525.
