iPad app version 2.2.2 and iOS 5 FAQ
Q: Having trouble downloading after switching to a new iPad?
A: Please try signing out and signing back in (through the Read section). If that doesn't fix the problem, please delete and reinstall the app.
Q: Will this update work for every iOS version?
A: No. Version 2.2.2 of the app is only compatible with iOS version 4.3 and higher. If you have a lower iOS version, you will need to update your iOS in order to see the app in the App Store.
Q: I have the new iPad - why do the pages take a while to come into focus and why is there tiling of pages that are downloading.
A: We are quickly adapting to changes brought about by the new iPad's amazing new retina display. Both of these issues will be addressed in the next update. Please note that the tiling of pages does not occur if you allow the entire issue to download first.
Q: Does the text appear sharper in 2.2.2 on the new iPad?
A: Yes!
Q: What can I do if version 2.2.1 of the app or prior is crashing?
A: Update to version 2.2.2, which fixes the crash problem. iOS version 4.3 or higher is required to install 2.2.2 (all iPads can update to a compatible OS).
Q: Will the Zinio app work with iOS 5?
A: The most recent version of the Zinio app (2.2.2) is compatible with iOS 5, but it is recommended that you upgrade to iOS 5 first before installing 2.2.2 (if you are using version 2.1.1 or prior) to avoid losing your existing bookmarks and having to re-download your previously downloaded magazines. If you are using version 2.1.2 or 2.1.3 of the app, simply update to 2.2.2, regardless of whether you are upgrade to iOS 5 or not. Please read the FAQ topic "Haven't upgraded to 2.2.2 yet?", which explains the upgrade options for users on 2.1.1 or prior.
Q: Where do I sign into the app?
A: You must sign into the app through the Read section. Once signed in, you will be able to view the library of titles associated with your Zinio account.
Q: What is the new WiFi Auto-Download feature?
A: The ability to select mulitple issues for download was our single most requested new feature -- and now it's here!
- You can choose to dowload all issues from the past 1, 2, 3, or 6 months, or choose to download your entire library. Once you select an auto-download range, your issues will download one at a time while your app is in the foreground and connected to WiFi.
- If you are downloading a large number of issues, you may consider turning Auto-Lock OFF so that the iPad doesn't go into sleep mode, thus interrupting your download progress. If you turn Auto-Lock OFF and are downloading a large number of issues, it is highly recommended that you connect your iPad to a power source to maintain your battery charge.
- With Auto-Lock OFF, the Zinio app will always stay awake when the app is in the foreground. Once downloads are complete, some users may want to turn Auto-Lock back to the default ON position if they want their iPad to go to sleep when the app is open but not in active use.
- When the app is in the foreground, the auto-lock status in the app settings will override the iPad's global auto-lock settings.
- If you close or put the Zinio app in the background, your download progress will stop; downloading will resume when the app is in the foreground.
Q: Can I set my app to open up to my library (Read) instead of Shop?
A: Yes! Beginning with version 2.1.2, the app now allows users to select a default section for the app to open up to. After you sign into the app, click on settings and simply select Explore, Read, or Shop as your default. The next time you close completely out of your app and re-open it, your change will be reflected.
Q: Did you get the following error? "You can't purchase this item. You must purchase the app that this item is for before you purchase the item."
A: You are currently signed in on your iPad Store with a different iTunes account than you used to install the Zinio app. Please follow these instructions to change the iTunes account specified in your iPad Store settings.
1. Navigate to Settings > Store
2. The Apple ID that is displayed is different than the one used to install the Zinio app.
3. Tap on the Apple ID and select Sign Out
4. Sign in and select "Use Existing Apple ID"
5. Re-open the Zinio app and attempt to place the order again.
Q: Is the background downloading feature in iOS 5 available for the Zinio app?
A: That ability to have content download while the app is in the background or closed is not currently available. The ability to download multiple items with the app in the foreground is, however, available with the WiFi Auto-Download feature available in version 2.2.2.
Q: Why is the Library Backup feature no longer an option?
A. Apple has required Zinio remove the option to include your downloaded issues in the iTunes backup. As a result, the library backup option in settings no longer appears in versions 2.1.2 and higher.
Q: Will the Zinio app be part of the Newsstand in iOS 5?
A: The Zinio app delivers content for thousands of magazines all in one app. and across iOS, Android, PC, MAC, WebOS, and Win 7 touchscreen tablets. It will continue to be accessible from the iTunes home screen.
Q: If I buy something on the Apple Newsstand can I read it in Zinio?
A: Items purchased on Newsstand are not connected to Zinio and do not transfer to the Zinio app.
Q: Why did I lose all my magazines or what does "Cleaning..." mean?
A: In iOS 5 or later, Apple has made a decision regarding the location of your issues and Zinio was forced to download magazines to a cache folder. If your iPad is running out of space, iOS5 may clear the cache of some apps. Apple will remove or "clean" everything in the cache folder including the your downloaded magazines.
The Zinio app will check the memory settings of the iPad when the user launches the Zinio App or attempts to download a new issue. Users can check their storage space on the device by going to Settings > General
> Usage.
We apologize for the inconvenience, this is a known issue with iOS 5 that Zinio has no control over. Apple has been made aware of the problems this causes for developers and users like you and they have announced plans to address in a future update to iOS5, so please stay tuned.
This is a pain point for us and other developers like Instapaper. If you are interested, here's a very detailed overview from someone at Instapaper of the problems Apple has created for apps like ours: http://www.marco.org/2011/10/13/ios5-caches-cleaning
Q: What can I do if my app freezes in the Shop or Explore sections in a pre-2.1.2 version of the app?
A: Do not delete the app. If you are running an earlier version of the Zinio app (2.1.1 or below) and have upgraded to iOS 5, you will need to upgrade your Zinio app to version 2.2.1. If you experience such a stall, "force quit" out of the app and upgrade to the latest version of the app (2.2.2).
To force quit out of an app:
1. Hold down the sleep/wake button until the red "slide to power off" slider appears
2. Let go of sleep/wake button
3. Hold down the home button until the app exits to the homescreen
Q: Haven't upgraded to 2.2.2 yet? (What you need to know if you are currently using app version 2.1.1 or prior)
1. If you are using 2.1.2 or 2.1.3 or update to 2.2.2 on iOS 4.x (4.3 or higher): your app will be fully functional. Note, however: due to a major change Apple has decided to make in how files are stored in iOS 5, if you upgrade to iOS 5 you will lose any bookmarks or downloaded magazine content on your device. As always, you can re-download your content again whenever you need to at no extra charge.
2. If you have not yet updated to 2.2.2, are using 2.1.1 or prior, and plan to upgrade to iOS 5: you have two options.
a) Update to 2.2.2 before upgrading to iOS 5, with the understanding that if you upgrade to iOS 5, you will lose existing bookmarks and downloaded magazines on your device. As always, you can re-download your content again whenever you need to at no extra charge.
b) Upgrade to iOS 5 before updating to 2.2.2. Before upgrading to iOS 5, you have two options: update to iOS 5 after doing a Library Backup and sync or update to iOS 5 without doing a Library Backup and sync. If you want to save yourself time when upgrading to iOS 5, turn Library Backup off in the app (Settings > Library Backup). Note: though this will save you time upgrading to iOS 5, you will lose all bookmarks and downloaded magazines on your device. As always, you can re-download your content again whenever you need to at no extra charge.
If you want to avoid losing your bookmarks or having to re-download your magazines and are willing to have your update to iOS 5 take potentially much longer (very large libraries can take several hours to backup), please follow these steps to ensure that your bookmarks and downloaded magazines are backed up:
1. Make sure the Library Backup setting in the Zinio app is turned on (Settings > Library Backup). Note: the backup may take several hours for those with very large libraries. If you prefer to avoid the long backup, you can turn Library Backup off, but you will lose any existing bookmarks and have to re-download your magazines after upgrading to iOS 5 and then 2.2.2.
2. Connect your device to your computer
3. In iTunes, select your device
4. Select the "Apps" option and make sure that "Sync Apps" is checked
5. Selected encrypted backup, then press the "Sync" button
6. Once the backup is complete, upgrade to iOS 5 and allow your apps to sync. Do not turn on iCloud yet. Next, restore your apps from your backup.
7. Install 2.2.2 from the App Store and launch the app
8. Turn on iCloud
