  • Plot Synopsis

A rock opera based on the last week of Jesus’ life. Lyrics by Tim Rice and music by Andrew Lloyd Webber. The first musical by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice to be produced for the professional stage, Jesus Christ Superstar has wowed audiences for over 40 years. A timeless work, the rock opera is set against the backdrop of an extraordinary and universally-known series of events but seen, unusually, through the eyes of Judas Iscariot. Loosely based on the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John, Superstar follows the last week of Jesus Christ’s life. The story, told entirely through song, explores the personal relationships and struggles between Jesus, Judas, Mary Magdalene, his disciples, his followers and the Roman Empire. The iconic 1970s rock score contains such well-known numbers as “Superstar,” “I Don’t Know How to Love Him” and “Gethsemane.” A true global phenomenon and perfect pick for schools, community theaters and professionals alike, Superstar continues to touch new generations of audiences and performers. FCT’s production will be “scripturally accurate,” meaning we will closely follow the original texts and have less external interpretation. You don’t need to be a follower of Jesus to audition or enjoy the show, but you’ll need to understand the vision that the characters in the story believe what they believe. This will provoke an intense but thoughtful discussion on the nature of the story and why it has impacted so many over the past two millennia. In addition, a focus will be placed on the nature of occupied territory, with Roman oppression guiding many characters’ motivations throughout. The show will be set in period, and will feature rich costumes, lighting, and a live orchestra.
