Thank you for your interest in the Region 5 GMaP Career Development Workshop.
The Career Development Workshop is an annual two-day workshop that brings together trainees, early-career investigators,* and senior investigators from institutions throughout the region. The purpose of the workshop is to provide small group instruction and one-on-one mentoring to individuals who intend to apply for grant funding in the coming year.
In an effort to offer more targeted content to applicants, a portion of the application will ask you about topics of interest in the realm of career development, as well as a section to select what are the most relevant scientific discipline categories of interest to you at this time. Previous workshops have covered topics such as: how to write specific aims, how to choose a funding mechanism, engaging diverse communities in research, qualitative research, and professional/personal life balance. Typically, the second day focuses on developing innovative research ideas, writing/fine tuning a biosketch, followed by one-on-one mentoring with seasoned investigators and one-on-one conversations with senior investigators on one’s own specific aims. There is also an opportunity for roundtable mentoring.
Workshop Logistics: This two-day training will take place August 3-4, 2020 on the Fred Hutch campus in Seattle, WA and will be available for up to 20 participants from GMaP Region 5 which includes AK, WA, OR, CA, HI, American Samoa and Guam. Trainees from backgrounds underrepresented in science based on the NIH definition** are particularly encouraged to apply, and/or those who are interested in cancer heath disparities work. Trainees who have previously attended are welcome to apply, but priority will be given to first time attendees.
The following travel costs will be paid by the GMaP program: airfare, one-night hotel stay (two if you are asked to participate in the symposium), and lunch during the meeting. All additional expenses will be the responsibility of the applicant.
Optional: Attention Early Career Investigators! As we are introducing a new format this year, you may opt in to participate in a mini-symposia pre-workshop (if you are a junior faculty/early-career investigator). You are given the opportunity to submit an abstract below. Highly rated abstracts will be considered to present in the morning GMaP symposia.
How to Apply: To apply, complete the application form and submit no later than April 8, 2020. Questions can be directed to Sara Cole at scole2@fredhutch.org. You will be notified of a decision within two weeks of the application deadline.
*Investigators are considered early-career investigators if they are within 10 years of completing their terminal research degree or are within 10 years of completing medical residence (or equivalent).
** Includes individuals from underrepresented racial and ethnic groups (Blacks or African Americans, Hispanics or Latinos, American Indians or Alaska Natives, Native Hawaiians or other Pacific Islanders), individuals with disabilities and individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds.
