Redwood Christian Schools Employment Policy: Divorce
Due to the special nature of our ministry, RCS requires clarification in the areas of separation and/or divorce.
The Board of Directors of Redwood Christian Schools (“Board”) understands from God’s Word that:
- God hates divorce (Malachi 2:26);
- There are only two provisions for a Christian to divorce his or her spouse: a) A partner’s sexual immorality (Matthew 19:9) and b) desertion by an unsaved spouse (I Corinthians 7:15);
- The two provisions stated above permit the innocent spouse to remarry (same Scripture sources); and
- At salvation, a pagan becomes a saint from God’s perspective (II Corinthians 5:17).
The Board also understands that many states permit a partner to divorce his or her spouse practically at will, to the extent that often neither party is declared “at fault.” Therefore, while the two biblical provisions stated in #2 and #3 above permit a Christian to divorce his or her spouse and to subsequently remarry, the Board is sympathetic to someone who has been deserted by his or her spouse and remains unmarried in an effort to reconcile the marriage.
Divorce will prevent the hiring or retention of a teacher or administrator at Redwood Christian Schools unless all of the following is true:
- RCS is privy to the circumstances leading to and precipitating the divorce.
- The applicant/employee did not initiate the divorce for unbiblical reasons.
- The applicant/employee has not remarried unless biblically permitted to do so.
- There is no evidence of emotional difficulties resulting from the divorce that will in any way hinder the applicant’s/employee’s performance.
- If the divorce/remarriage occurred prior to the applicant’s/employee’s salvation, there is ample evidence that there is indeed a new life.
- The Board is unanimous in its decision to hire/retain the applicant/employee.
