The IACP/FirstNet Indian Country Officer of the Year Award provides international recognition to law enforcement officers who have demonstrated exceptional valor in service to the people of Indian Country, thereby exhibiting the highest traditions of Law Enforcement. The award is presented at the Indian Country Law Enforcement Section’s Midyear Meeting.
Eligibility:
A nominee must be a sworn law enforcement officer employed within Indian Country, regardless of rank or position, who has performed an act of valor, or exceptional service during the calendar year. A posthumous award may be made in the name of a law enforcement officer to the surviving spouse, child or parent of such officer.
A. Act(s) of Exceptional Valor
Definition: An act of exceptional valor shall mean that a police officer has, by a conspicuous act or acts, clearly distinguished him/herself by bravery, heroism or outstanding courage and has placed the safety and welfare of the people of Indian Country above all other considerations.
B. Outstanding, Exceptional Service
Definition: Completion of a task or assignment that went beyond the normal call of duty, with served to enhance public safety, encourage community involvement and or demonstrated an effective use of the culture and traditions of Indigenous people, in crime prevention, community oriented policing or other projects.
Required documents:
- Chief Executive Letter
- A complete report of the incident or act
- Copies of all official reports, statements, photographs, maps, etc.; and
- If available, related media reports such as videotapes, newspaper articles, etc.
*It is recognized that confidentiality considerations may preclude the submission of reports and related materials. However, there must be sufficient documentation for a nominee to be considered.
The below form must be used for all nominations. Please enclose with your nomination any documentation or additional information you believe will assist the judges in evaluating your nominee.
