If a client tells you that he or she is thinking about death or suicide, it is imperative that you evaluate the immediate danger.
At times, your time with the client may be limited (they may hang up the phone before the conversation ends and you complete a full assessment), at times like these we need to be targeted in our approach and ensure we determine a plan for suicide.
Those at the highest risk have a specific suicide PLAN, the MEANS to carry out the plan, a TIME SET for doing it, and an INTENTION to do it. Being ALONE significantly increases the immediate risk of suicide.
