What is Community Based-Learning?
Community-Based Learning (CBL) is a teaching and learning strategy that works to integrate community through mutual collaboration into courses and/or curriculum in order to enhance student learning and increase community capacity.
If accepted faculty fellows are required to:
- attend weekly 1.5 to 2-hour semester-long seminar of sharing, exploring, and learning about academic service-learning (AS-L) & community engagement with other faculty members.
- Develop a course or curriculum enhancement, and/or creative/scholarly initiative with students, which integrates community-based learning
- Offer the course/curriculum integration within a year of the fellowship.
Accepted Faculty Fellows will receive a one (1) course release time for Fall 2020.
What do we provide?
Engage@EMU's Office of Academic Service-Learning (AS-L) provides support for faculty to plan, implement, and assess academic service-learning and community-based learning in their courses and/or curriculum. The Office of AS-L also helps to identify and/or provide funding opportunities for faculty research and creative activity in community engagement, engaged scholarship, and Academic Service-Learning.
