  • About Hands-on Activities

We provide a limited number of visits for hands-on activities to our training labs. These should be arranged well in advance and are typically limited to 15 people total, including chaperones. Hands-on activities usually require a minimum of 3 hours to complete.

You can see the types of activities that we do on our website.

    Career-based Activites

    • Speed networking: Meet scientists at Fred Hutchinson to build networks and learn about different career paths in biological sciences!
    • Panel about science careers: An in-person or virtual meeting with scientists to talk about career paths in science. Get advice on how to pursue different careers and learn about the day-to-day work in each.
    • One-on-one mentoring/pen pals: Match students with scientists who can give advice on applying to school, jobs, and share about their research.

    Science/education-based Activites

    • Facetime a scientist: Have a scientist video call into your classroom! Learn about a scientist’s question and how they are working to answer it. If small groups are desired, more than one scientist can be requested.
    • Guest lecture: From the Washington high school science curriculum, we are most well-suited to discuss various topics within the genetics development, gene regulation, and inheritance units. Other topics can be requested, with our other specialties in cancer biology, immunology, virology, microbiology, and cell biology.
    • Lab tour: See what a wet lab at Fred Hutch looks like! While virtual, a scientist will video call to show you what is in the lab, what lab equipment is being used for, and take questions.

  • Note there are restrictions regarding minors in research labs, although minors may tour and participate in activities in the Hutch Training Labs.  Additionally, minors must have parent/guardian permission via signed form, which we will provide.

  • Did you know that Fred Hutch has virtual lab tours that you can access on-demand? Visit the Science Education Partnership's virtual events page for recorded tours and a schedule of upcoming tours that you can register to attend live.
