• Astro Hack Week 2020 Application

  • Astro Hack Week 2020 will happen August 31 - September 4, 2020 as a virtual hack week. Based on past experience, we're expecting to have more applications than spots. We would like to ask you to fill out the form below in order to be considered to attend Astro Hack Week by July 1st, 2020. We will let you know about attendance by mid-July. You will either be selected, or put in a waiting list.

The workshop encourages collaboration between participants, rather than competition, and provides extensive opportunities each day for participants to work with each other. The meeting is aimed at astronomers and researchers from other fields (including, but not limited to, statistics and computer science) with an interest in both astronomy and data science. We welcome applications from researchers at all stages in their careers, as well as from industry. In addition, we welcome participants from a wide range of backgrounds and experience levels with data science-related methods and tools, from beginners to experts.

Participant selection will be made with the goal of enhancing the data science community within astronomy, and we particularly encourage requests to attend from junior astronomers and people who are new to data-driven astronomy.

Finally, by completing this form you agree for your data to be used for the purpose of participant selection as well as demographic comparisons with past and future Astro Hack Weeks. We will not share your data beyond the organizers of Astro Hack Week or use it for any other purpose and we commit to anonymizing the data within a month of participant selection. Please email us (astrohackweek@gmail.com) if you have any questions or concerns or would like to remove your application.

  • Code of Conduct

  • Participants will be expected to follow the Astro Hack Week code of conduct which is intended to foster the welcoming, collaborative atmosphere of past workshops. Please read the code of conduct and then answer the question below.

  • In selecting participants for Astro Hack Week 2020, we aim to select a diverse pool of participants along many axes with a wide range of skill levels and backgrounds.

Please contact us at astrohackweek@gmail.com with any questions, concerns or suggestions.

  • Demographic Questions

  •

Astro Hack Week aims to admit a diverse cohort of participants among many different axes. For this reason, we invite you to share information about your personal identity.

Your personal demographic data will be de-identified by assigning a unique ID. The de-identified information will be kept in a secure database and used for program evaluation purposes. After this project is completed, the master list connecting your name with a unique ID will be destroyed.

Note that providing this information is entirely optional.

  • Gender and Transgender Identity

  • LGBTQ+ Identity

  • Financial Support

  • **Note**: Originally, we anticipated to provide travel support to a limited number of participants to aid their attendance. While this is obviously no longer the case for a remote meeting, you may still use the question below to indicate that you might need financial support (e.g. for additional childcare). We will follow up with you directly about your needs, while we also work with our sponsors to figure exactly what we might be able to support.

The selection procedure for attendance will be need-blind, which means the information below will help us figure out whom to support from the accepted participants.

If you are a student, we encourage you to ask for help at your institution in order to write a budget and find out what sources of funding are available to you, so that you know if you need to request support here.

  • Thank you for applying to Astro Hack Week! We will be in touch with more inforamtion in early April!
