    Are you a good candidate to be a rehabber?

    Trainees Must Live Within 30 Miles of Raleigh, NC

  • * All new accepted applicants will be asked to apply for an Apprentice License from the Wildlife Resources Commission and will be assigned a licensed mentor for a minimum of one year. This is the required process for all incoming rehabbers throughout North Carolina. 

    *Since the state requires a mentor for each new trainee there will be times that we do not have a mentor in your area. A mentor needs to be close enough to work with you in an emergency.  

    *Training is limited to the active months of baby season. You can still submit an application off-season.

  • * Rehabbing is an adult activity. It is not suitable for students or children. Older children may assist with close supervision of parent who is a trained rehabber.

  • What wild mammals would you be interested in working with? (Wildlife Welfare does not work with raccoons, bats, foxes or other rabies vector animals.) We do not work with birds.*

  • Can you provide feedings every 4 hours during the day? Approx. Feeding Times: 7am, 12pm, 4-5pm and 8-9pm.*
  • Can we count on you to reply to text and email as you would for work or family? (If you feel you cannot, please do not apply to be trained by Wildlife Welfare.)*
  • If you work full-time, can you come home for lunch to meet this feeding schedule seven days a week?*
  • Do you have a separate room in your house away from family members and pets to keep wildlife? Needs to have a window and be indoors.*
  • Does this room allow a standing cage 3-4 feet tall by 2.5-3 feet wide?*
  • NOTE: Apartments are rarely suitable for rehabbing wildlife. Even if you own your home, you may need to check with any homeowners association or subdivision rules and regulations.

  • If you rent your home, you need your landlord's written permission to keep small animals indoors, and they be kept in a cage at all times. Animals are never permitted to roam freely inside the home. If you rent a home with a yard, written permission is also required to place an outdoor cage in a shaded area of the yard.

  • Do you have a homeowners association or subdivision rules that govern what you can put in your yard?*
  • Does your home have a yard suitable for a large 4x4x8 cage with 1/2" welded wire with plenty of TALL hardwoods or pine trees?*
  • Can you build or have someone build a large 4x4x8 foot cage if needed? It would need to be made with 1/2 inch welded wire (no chicken wire).*
