Risks vs Benefits of Acupuncture
It is very important you read and understand risks involved with any procedure so that you can properly consider the risks and benefits of your treatment. Acupuncture involves the insertion of fine, sterile needles into specific points on the body. During the acupuncture treatment, you may experience mild sensations including pricking on needle insertion; tingling; aching; soreness; numbness; fullness; distension; pressure; heaviness; warmth. These sensations can be considered a normal part of an acupuncture treatment. The quality and strength of sensation varies, depending on the individual, the condition and the outcome trying to achieve. If at any point you do experience feelings of discomfort or sharp pain that does not subside within a minute or two, please tell the practitioner immediately so that they can ensure you remain comfortable. This likely involves readjusting or reinsertion or removal of an acupuncture needle. I understand there is no guarantee concerning the outcome of my treatment and that I am free to stop acupuncture treatment at any time.
Some minor bleeding may occur after a needle is removed, this is harmless and a normal occurrence with needle removal. Mild bruising may also occur where a needle has previously been inserted, again it is usually of no concern and will in most cases fade within a few days or a week. Tightness or mild aching sensation can also be experienced after needles have been removed, this usually resolves within half an hour, and on rare occasions into the next day. Any symptom you experience which you are concerned about, please let us know as soon as possible so that we can assess the situation and determine if further action is required.
In rare circumstances it is also possible to experience dizziness, faintness, light headedness, mild nausea, chills, sweating or anxiety. These symptoms relate to a phenomenon called “needle shock”, and is considered a harmless transient reaction to acupuncture, and is often associated with low blood sugar, exhaustion or anxiety. After the treatment, most people feel improved physical and psychological wellbeing, a sense of an energy shift and in some cases tiredness. Pain relief can be expected immediately or in the ensuing days. In some instances symptoms may worsen before they start to improve and can be considered a normal part of the healing process. It is not always possible to predict an outcome of treatment as responses vary greatly between individuals, the condition being treated and its severity. If you feel you might be having a reaction or abnormal feelings, please contact the clinic and discuss this with your practitioner who will advise you accordingly. In the unlikely event that you experience shortness of breath, sweating and chest pain after the treatment, then you should contact your general practitioner immediately.
Very rare risks of acupuncture include, nerve damage, organ puncture &/or infection, the clinic uses sterile disposable needles and maintains a clean and safe environment. I understand that while this document describes the most likely or possible risks that can occur with treatment according to the current literature, other side effects or risks may occur which is outside the practitioners expected parameters or knowledge.
Cupping treatments can creat redness on the skin and bruising, and may feel tender the next day.
