    You may register multiple dogs. If you have any questions about which class to sign up for, please contact us. 

    Dogs in the conformation show are placed in different classes based on their age, prior success, or working abilities. And the age of the dog is its age on first official day of the show, which will be June 13, 2026.

    We also offer a temperament test for youth and a more intense test for adult dogs. The youth temperament test is available to all dogs at least six months old. Passing this test does not qualify a dog for placement in the breeding pool, but failing does not disqualify a dog, either. It is an opportunity for you and the club to get an early impression of the dog's attitude and suitability and for you to have some fun learning about your young partner. 

    Adult dogs are entered in the adult temperament test. Passing this more stringent test goes to toward placement in the breeding pool and proves to the owner, the breeder, and the club that we are developing proper hovawarts. Dogs 18 months old and up are eligible for this adult test.  

    Please review the classes that follow so that your dog will be placed in the correct category. Please also note that for adult dogs there is a discount for registering a dog for both the conformation and temperament testing.

    The HCNA encourages spayed and neutered dogs to participate as well, but they are not eligible for best of breed awards. You are welcome to sign your spayed or neutered dog up for the temperament testing too, even if it will, obviously, never breed. The evaluation is still helpful. 

    If you are registering more than two dogs for the event, we ask that you complete another registration form the other dogs.

    Prices:

    Puppies Three Months and under Six Months: Free

    Conformation Six to Nine Months/Non-breeding: $35.00

    Conformation Nine Months and Older: $60.00

    Youth Temperament Test: $35.00

    Temperament Test Eighteen Months and Older: $60.00   

    Combination Adult Conformation and Temperament Test: $105.00 

     

  • CONFORMATION CLASSES (age on the first day of the show -- June 13, 2026) 


    Puppy Class: Three months and under six months.

    Junior Class: Six months and under nine months. May compete for Best of Breed.

    Youth Class: Nine months and under 18 months. May compete for Best of Breed.

    Intermediate Class: 15 months and under 24 months. May compete for Best of Breed.

    Open Class: 15 months and older. May compete for Best of Breed.

    Working Class: 15 months and older on the first day of the show and holds a working title or certificate. Working title documentation shall include details of the test. Should the certification be found to be insufficient, the dog will be shown in a different, appropriate class. Please supply this documentation before the show. May compete for Best of Breed.

    Champion Class: 15 months and older and holds one of the following titles: HCNA Speciality Show Winner; HCNA Champion; FCI International Champion; National Champion -- IHF (one national championship earned from a member nation of the International Hovawart Federation); National Champion – Other (two national championships earned from an FCI-member nation that is not in the IHF). Participants are required to present proof of such champion status on the day of the show. Failure to present such proof will result in the dog being shown in a different, appropriate class. May compete for Best of Breed.

    Veteran Class: Eight years old and older. May compete for Best of Breed.

    Neutered/Spayed Class/Non-Breeding shall be for dogs at least six months of age and who have been neutered or spayed before the first day of the show or for those dogs without approved registration papers or with disqualifying features, which are therefore considered Non-breeding (NB) registrations.

    Every participant will receive a written evaluation of their dog.

     

    TEMPERAMENT TESTING


    The adult temperament test is for dogs at least 18 months old on the first day of event. Passing the adult test is a requirement to enter the club’s breeding pool.

    As noted above, all dogs can take the junior temperament test, but only passing the adult test qualifies a dog for breeding status.

    The temperament test is only open to Hovawarts registered with the HCNA or another International Hovawart Federation member club.

    The HCNA reserves the right to remove a registered dog from scheduled temperament testing due to time constraints or other factors. Refunds will be issued in this case.

  • Although we will break for lunch on both Saturday and Sunday, we prefer to stay at the event site so as not to lose too much time. You may, of course, bring your own lunch. But we will also be ordering sandwiches or the like at the time of the event. As we get closer to the show, we'll let you know more about these plans and the anticipated cost.
