    Declaration of Candidacy for the 2023-2024 Academic Year
  • Dear Candidate:

    Thank you for your interest in applying for the KCC Student Trustee position for the 2023-2024 academic year.

    Responsibilities for the student trustee, District 520:

    The Student Trustee to the Board of Trustees position plays an integral part in the decision-making process at Kankakee Community College. The student holding this position serves as the: 1) Student Advisory Council President, 2) Liaison for the entire student body, and 3) student representative to the KCC Board of Trustees. It is the intention of this position to foster the continued link between the Board of Trustees and students. Please see below for student representative responsibilities.

    1) Attend monthly Board of Trustees meetings generally held on the second Monday in the Board room.
    2) Attend planning and committee meetings as scheduled.
    3) Serve on board committees.
    4) Take part in various college events and ceremonies.
    5) Complete assigned projects.
    6) Serve as an active member on KCC’s Student Advisory Council.
    7) Be willing to represent KCC on the Illinois Community College Board’s Student Advisory Council (ICCB SAC).
    8) Meet monthly with the College President as well as the Vice President of Student Affairs to prepare for monthly Board of Trustees meetings.
    9) Provide an oral report at most open session meetings of the Board of Trustees.
    10) Attend special college functions as determined by the vice president of student affairs or designee

     

    • Eligibility Requirements 
    • 1) Be enrolled in a minimum of three (3) credit hours in fall 2023 and spring 2024 semesters.
      2) Have sophomore standing (completed at least 30 credit hours) by fall 2023.
      3) Maintain residency in District 520.
      4) Currently have and maintain a cumulative GPA of 2.50 or higher.
      5) Be in good academic and conduct standing with the college.
      6) Serve the required attendance at Board Meetings.
      7) Attend meetings or workshops as requested by the Board, College President, and Vice President of Student Affairs or designee.

       

    • Additional Expectations  
    • 1) Candidates should have demonstrated concern for the welfare of both students and the college.
      2) Candidates must have sufficient time for the responsibilities of serving on the board without negative impact on their academic requirements.
      3) Candidates should understand the responsibilities of the student representative and the obligation it requires to advance and support the college’s mission.
      4) Candidates should have demonstrated academic success and appreciate the need for effective academics at Kankakee Community College.
      5) Candidates should have participated, at some level, in student activities and/or clubs and organizations at Kankakee Community College.
      6) Candidates should have the willingness to communicate with students, and gather campus-wide comments or concerns.

    • Selection Procedures 
    • 1) The selection of the Student Trustee must be supervised by the Office of Student Life and Development in conjunction with the Student Advisory Council.
      2) All applications shall be verified by Student Life and Development Coordinator.
      3) Eligible applicants shall be placed on the ballot for Student Trustee elections.
      4) The vice president of student affairs shall confirm the final candidate, and report the results to the College President who will then present the candidate to the Board of Trustees to be seated.

      Friday, February 24 – Friday, March 10, 2023
      - Student Trustee interviews start

      Friday, March 17, 2023
      - The winner of the Student Trustee Elections will be notified.

      Monday, April 3, 2023
      – Student representative orientation and introductions.

      Monday, April 10, 2023
      – Student Trustee introduced to the KCC Board of Trustees at the Open Session Meeting at 5 p.m. in the Board room.

      Monday, May 8, 2023
      – Last board meeting for 2021-22 Student Trustee. The 2022-2023 Student Trustee attends to
      observe meeting and gain knowledge of Board protocol.

      Monday, June 12, 2023*
      - Student Trustee is seated at the Board meeting.
      *Must be present at this meeting (5 p.m. in the Board Room)

      Student Trustee:                                June 12, 2023 – May 1, 2024

      As KCC Student Trustee of the District 520; you have taken on the responsibility of representing your fellow students in a professional and respectable manner. Your actions and comments both on and off campus will have an impact on the perception of the KCC Board of Trustees.

       This document is put forth in order to ensure that all students receive proper and appropriate representation. The student trustee is expected to comply with these guidelines in order to protect and preserve the sanctity of Kankakee Community College.

       1. The use of inappropriate language is not acceptable.

      2. You may be part of highly confidential and restrictive conversations. You cannot divulge this information.

      3. Never degrade another person, club or organization. Set the tone for civility and positive approaches to problem-solving. Always seek professional communication advice.

      4. Listen to students’ grievances without bias or status. You represent all students, hear them out and ensure that they understand that you will do your best to let their point of view be known.

      5. Personal actions while on campus or attending school functions should always be of high caliber, setting a professional example for others.

      6. Make yourself available to students, campus wide, through scheduled student  information sessions, or student organization meetings.

       You are expected to meet monthly with the Vice President of Student Affairs to discuss your monthly submission to the Board. The executive assistant to the president will maintain regular contact with you for information and updates, as requested by the president or the board.

       College administration reserves the right to limit and/or discontinue your participation at any time during the term of acceptance (June 2023 – May 2024).
