  • DUTY TO NOT MAKE A MISREPRESENTATION

You have a duty under the Insurance Contracts Act 1984 (ICA) to take reasonable care not to make a misrepresentation to the insurer (your duty). Your duty applies only in respect of a policy that is a consumer insurance contract, which is a term defined in the ICA. Your duty applies before you enter into the policy, and also before you renew, extend, vary, or reinstate the policy. Before you do any of these things, you may be required to answer questions and the insurer will use the answers you provide in deciding whether to insure you, and anyone else to be insured under the policy, and on what terms. To ensure you meet your duty, your answers to all the questions must be truthful, accurate and complete. If you fail to meet your duty, the insurer may be able to cancel your contract, or reduce the amount it will pay if you make a claim, or both. If your failure is fraudulent, the insurer may be able to refuse to pay a claim and treat the contract as if it never existed.

  • As we intend to provide the best coverage in the unfortuante event of a claim, we seek to provide our clients with the broadest policy wording from the insurers we receive quotations from, and as such we provide quotations for Accidental Damage policies.

If you wish to take out a lower level of coverage we ask that you consider how more limited policies may affect your coverage i the event of a claim.

To assist in making this decision, we have put together some of the key differences between the policies from a couple of insurers.  These are not a comparison guide of a policy you may receive,  and may not reflect the level of cover you have been quoted.

It is important that you read the PDS that is provided with your quotation to ascertain the level of coverage and sublimits provided by the policy we provide.  If you have any specific coverage questions, we ask that you direct these questions to your Account Manager.

    BUILDING AND CONTENTS SUMS INSURED
  • With a significant number of homeowners in Australia being underinsured we implore you to consider the sum insured for your property.

For many, this figure was set many years ago and has increased with token annual increases.  Due to more recent rapidly increasing inflation, continuing supply chain issues and other economic forces, repair and replacement costs have increased substantially, and considerably.  We recommend you seek advice from a qualified professional to undertake a valuation for replacement cost of your property and improvements.

To assist, we have provided a calculator on our website, whilst this is not intended to replace a professional valuation, it can assist as a guide.  Visit https://www.delphic.com.au/tools and click on the Home Building Calculator option.

  • Whilst much of the concern is regarding the underinsurance of buildings, underinsurance of contents is also a frequent issue in the event of a claim.  When it comes to estimating the replacement cost of contents, online calculators can be used, however a better (although admittedly more labour and time intensive) method is to record how much it would cost to replace every item in your house.

Bear in mind that many items can be overlooked due to their everyday nature including crockery, cutlery, bed linen, books, clothing  and footwear, but these would still have to be replaced in an insured event.  Taking clear pictures and retianing proofs of purchase will also assist in the caluclation of the true cost of your contents, should they be replaced.

In the absence of undertaking this task, we have provided a tool that may assist, however this is only to be used as a guide.  Please visit www.delphic.com.au/tools and click on the Home Contents Calculator option.

  • Specified Valuables

Each policy has a different sublimit for items of value, such as jewellery, artwork, or gold; we therefore ask that you note the most expensive items you have either individually (such as an engagement ring) or as a collection (such as artwork) and the sum insured for the individual or collection.

If you have large collections, it may be worthwhile putting together a list and providing it to us.  If the total sum insured for valuable is in excess of 25% of the total contents insured, there may be limitations on some policies and therefore it is important that you spend time considering the sums insured for all such contents.

  • If you have further items, please provide us with a detailed schedule
