Majors are required to complete ten units of coursework, a junior seminar, senior thesis I; and eight additional African American Studies courses, in addition to their independent work and a mandatory senior comprehensive exam. All courses for the major must be taken for a letter grade (no P/D/F). A course with the PDF only grade option can count toward the major if the course is primary-listed with AAS, cross-listed with AAS, or has been approved as a creative or practice-based cognate by the AAS Director of Undergraduate Studies before the course is taken. Only one PDF course may count toward the major, and no more than two approved cognates may be used to satisfy your departmental requirements.

Four courses must be taken in the chosen subfield with two additional courses as follows:

    • If the chosen subfield is AACL or RPP, then two GRE courses.
    • If the chosen subfield is GRE, then one AACL and one RPP.
