    Beak: any of various rigid projecting mouth structures (as of a turtle)

    Buoyancy: the ability or tendency to float in water or air or some other fluid

    Carapace: a bony plate covering the back or part of the back of an animal (such as a turtle or crab)

    Entangle: to become twisted together with or caught in

    Impact: the action of one object coming forcibly into contact with another.

    Organ- a part of an organism that is self-contained and has a specific vital function

    Plastron: the ventral part (underside) of the shell of a tortoise or turtle consisting typically of nine symmetrically placed bones

    Prey: an animal taken by another animal as food

    Rehabilitation: restoration especially by therapeutic means to an improved condition of physical function

    Scute: an external bony or horny plate or large scale

    Skeleton- an internal or external framework of bone, cartilage, or other rigid material for support

    Species: a class of individuals having common attributes and designated by a common name

    Veterinarian: a person qualified to treat diseased or injured animals

    Veterinarians can specialize in taking care of a particular group of animals. There are veterinarians that take care of horses, dogs & cats, exotic pets, zoo animals, sea turtles, and more!

    Loggerhead Marinelife Center's protocol is Rescue to Release. All sea turtles that are at our hospital are actively receiving treatment. Once they are deemed healthy, they are released back out into the ocean.

    There is no turtle specific medication, so we have to use a mix of dog/cat & human medication to treat our patients.

    To specialize in sea turtle medicine there are additional educational requirements beyond a doctorate degree.

    You can become a Vet Tech, volunteer in our rehab center if you are 18 or older, or become an ocean steward by recycling, using reusable items, or even hosting a clean up in your community to help protect our marine life!
