    Main Idea: Relationship is at the core of the Gospel

  • Review of Romans:

                Ch. 1-11: Faith in truth

                Ch. 12-15: Faith in practice

                Ch. 16: Faith in fellowship

  • Paul’s Relationships in Rome  

    Pheobe – the letter carrier, a prominent figure in the church, pagan name, a true servant of the church 

    Aquila and Priscilla – husband and wife who were with Paul in Corinth later remained in Ephesus, and are back in Rome, had house churches along the way

    Epeanetus – Paul’s dear friend and 1st convert in Asia, likely brought to Christ through Paul

    Mary – from Rome, serving the church, potentially one of its earliest members, no title but a faithful worker

    Andronicus and Junias – fellow Jews, fellow prisoners, likely converted before Paul 

    Ampliatus – likely a slave

    Urbanus, Stachys, Appeles, Herodian – uncertain other than they are fellow workers and friends

    Aristobulus and Narcisuss – households (including family and slaves) they were likely slaves

    Tryphena and Tryphosa – two females who’s names mean delicate and dainty (their ministry was not)

    Persis – an older woman who had worked hard and was highly regarded

    Rufus and his mother – may have actually been the son of Simon who carried Jesus’ cross

    Asyncritus, Phlegon, Hermes, Patrobus, Hermas and brothers – could be a “businessmen group” of men who lived together and served together, may have been another house church

    Philologus, Julia, Nereus and his sisters, Olympus – leaders (“all the saints with them”)

     

  • Paul’s Relationships in Corinth:

    Timothy – Paul’s “protégé”, former Jew selected by Paul to help build up the Gentile churches

    Lucious – likely a leader in the church in Antioch

    Jason – potentially Paul’s host in Thessalonica

    Sosipater – accompanied Paul through Greece

    * these 3 were part of a group gathering in Corinth who were selected to accompany Paul to Jerusalem

    Tertious – the letter writer who was likely a highly regarded slave in Gaius’ house

    Gaius – Paul’s host, a Roman nobleman

    Erastus – a public official and Gaius’ friend

    Quartus – the least significant of the group, but a brother nonetheless
