The purpose of the North U Welcome to Match Racing 101 Series is to explain to newcomers or relative newcomers to match racing and match racing umpiring what match racing is and how it works. Dave Perry loves revealing the game to sailors and judges who are possibly looking for a fun new way to enjoy the sport they love, and doing it in a way that is both educational and entertaining. Not only is match racing extremely fun to do, match racing dramatically improves sailors’ racing skills and knowledge, making them much better fleet racers for having match raced.
In this four part series, Dave will explain how the game works, what the different rules are, and what the various different tactics & strategies are in the prestart, on the upwind and downwind legs and around the marks. He will also explain how the unique and clever delayed penalty system works, as well as how the umpire system operates. Sailors and judges are encouraged to come learn about match racing while waiting for the AP flag to come down.
This Series will be for sailors and umpires who have not competed or umpired in a World Sailing Grade 4 match racing regatta or higher. North U is also offering a Match Racing Master Class for sailors and race officials who have sailed or umpired in a Grade 4 or higher. The North U Welcome to Match Racing 101 Series is completely FREE thanks to the generosity of the late David Storrs and his family. David would be so thrilled that avid sailors and judges are taking the time to study and learn more about the game which he called the most complex form of sailboat racing.
This will be a four (4) week series on Saturday afternoons (4:00 pm east coast time). Each session will be one (1) hour. The series will begin Saturday, May 9, 2020.
