The goal of the starter flock program is to cultivate new members that are going to be active breeders and participate in the association for years to come with the hopes of creating the next
generation of Columbia sheep and preserving the breed.
Program is open to anyone over 18 years who have not been a Columbia sheep Senior or Junior member in the past. Applications are due March 1st. The Board of Directors will select a recipient by April 1st to be announced in the sale issue of Speaking of Columbias magazine.
The recipient will receive one (1) ewe lamb, one (1) yearling ewe, and one (1) brood ewe. The ewes will be donated by current CSBA members. The ewes will be registered in the Columbia Sheep
Breeders Association and will have at least a QR status.
The CSBA will assign a mentor who will be available to answer questions and provide advice to the recipient. The mentor will be a current (paid) CSBA member.
The winner must be present at the National Show and Sale to receive the flock. At that time, the winner will be awarded the ewes and receive a $500 voucher to use toward the purchase of a ram at the National Show and Sale.
In the second year, the CSBA will provide a $250 voucher for the purchase of any Columbia sheep at the following National Sale. In year five (5), the recipient must support the program with the donation of a female from their flock of any age or provide a monetary donation of $500 which would be used for the purchase of a female for the starter flock program out of the National Sale that year.
The recipient must maintain their CSBA membership and registrations for five years. In the first five years, if the recipient finds it necessary to liquidate their Columbia flock or cannot maintain them, he/she must notify the Association.
