To learn and serve as an interfaith chaplain, we seek to present in such a way that we are respecting of all patients, families, and team members. We ask students to be sensitive to the messages their attire may convey. We seek this sensitivity because we prioritize the value that the ministry of the interfaith chaplain is to facilitate the full diversity of the spiritual care of others.
We want to offer respect for others and create safe spaces for effective care in times of personal and spiritual crisis.
When serving as an interfaith chaplain in the clinical setting, we ask that religious symbols not be worn on the outside of garments. Students are permitted to wear small items of jewelry, that represent their faith tradition, that are discrete.
There are occasions when, in the CPE process, religious apparel or wearable symbols may become part of the learning process for the student’s development of their professional and pastoral identity. You and your Certified Educator will work through these learnings as a part of your CPE experience.
