  • Ama Questionaires (Level of Toxins)
Undigested food turns into a thick, toxic sticky substance, called ama.  Ama is the root cause of many diseases.  The presence of ama in the system leads to fatigue, and a feeling of heaviness.  It may induce consipation, indigestion, gases, diarrhea, bad breath, perverted taste, and mental confusion.

The tongue gets a thick coating and there may be generalized body aches and stiffness.  Because of the critical importance of agni (digestive fire) in maintaining health, it is important to have a balanced diet.  The toxins clog the cell membranes and disturb cellular intelligence, generating unhealthy cravings.

Generally, a balanced dosha without ama produces healthy cravings and disturbed doshas with ama create unhealthy cravings.  Like attracts like.  When we are out of balance, we crave the foods that keep us out of balance and vice versa.  Unprocessed thoughts, feelings, and emotions are then stored within the intercellular space of the connective tissue, and that becomes the subconscious mind.  This unprocessed material that stays within the connective tissue can be described as mental ama (toxins).

Causes & Symptoms of Ama include:

    • I feel heavy or tired after a meal (within 30 minutes to 2 hours after eating)
    • I eat animal protein (eggs, meat, fish) at least 4x a week
    • I am a fast eater
    • I drink ice water or cold drinks
    • I drink alcohol 4 or more times per week
    • I eat in the car
    • I eat after 8 pm
    • I sometimes nap during the day (more than 24 minutes)
    • I often have gas, abdominal distention and gurgling sounds
    • I sometimes don't have a bowel movement every day of the week
    • My tongue is heavily coated in the morning
    • I feel heavy, constipated and congested at least 1X a week
    • I feel aches and tired upon waking
    • I watch TV or read while eating
    • I eat on the run, snack or while moving (standing, walking, driving) this includes drinks
    • I eat canned, frozen or fast food at least 4X within the week.  This includes frozen vegetables, frozen pre-cooked foods etc.
    • When I look at my tongue in the morning it is completely covered with a white layer on top.

*It's important to cook your food low and slow, stirring constantly.  Evenly and properly cooked food is nourishing and doesn't produce ama (given it's digested properly).
