Absolute Contraindications: PRP is safe for most individuals between the ages of 18-80. There are very few contraindications, however, patients with the following conditions are not candidates:
- Abnormal platelet function (blood disorders, hemodynamic instability, low fibrinogen, critical thrombocytopenia)
- Skin diseases (i.e. SLE, porphyria)
- Cancer of any kind
- Chemotherapy treatments
- Severe metabolic and systemic disorders
- Acute and chronic infections hronic liver pathology (hepatitis, cirrhosis, fatty liver disease)
- Anti-coagulation therapy (Warfarin, Lovenox, Xarelto, Aspirin, etc
- Underlying sepsis
- Pregnant or breastfeeding
Relative Contraindications: PRP may be performed if you have any of the following, however it is preferred that these conditions are resolved prior.
- Use of NSAIDs (Aspirin, Advil, Aleve, Ibuprofen, Motrin, Naproxen, Nurofen, Voltaren, Diclofenac, etc within 48 hours of the procedure
- Corticosteroid injection at the treatment site within one month
- Systemic use of corticosteroids within 2 weeks of the procedure
- Tobacco use
- Recent fever or illness
- Hemoglobin <10 g/dL
