Culture Lab LIC, in collaboration with LIC Partnership, is bringing together local building owners interested in showcasing the arts more predominantly in LIC. In addition to beautifying our neighborhood, it will raise morale during these challenging times.
Essential Art Walk will be a series of public art murals sponsored by local building owners. We intend to commission local artists to create murals in LIC.
Murals will be designated for walls and construction barriers. Fences, open lots and windows will also be considered. All works will be temporary, unless otherwise noted.
Each participating building owner will be able to choose from the artists who have submitted their work through our online platform. Then the artist will design and complete an original work of art for the specific wall provided by the owner.
Selected artists will be paid $10 per square foot with a minimum of $200 and a maximum of $1,200. Installation equipment will be provided by the building owners, if needed (lifts, ladders and scaffolding). An art supply stipend will also be provided to the artists.
A contract of service between the artists and building owner protecting both parties, will be presented and signed upon selection.
LIC Partnership will be adding these locations to its existing “Art Walk” made available through their LIC Local smart signage system and mobile site.
These projects will be fully documented by local photographers and streamed to LICLive.nyc, to provide these works of art, the installation, and artists’ process for anyone, anywhere to enjoy.
Street art is one of the art forms that has made LIC a destination. It has, at times, been at odds with development. This project aims to bridge that gap. Let's work together to embrace this artform and the benefits and character it adds to our neighborhood.
Essential Art Walk is a celebration of Queens diversity, our beloved neighborhood of LIC, and ourselves. This new art walk of world-class murals by local artists, will honor LIC’s status as an arts capitol while serving as an inspiration during these challenging times.
Artists will be chosen by the building owners and a collaboration from that point will begin. Each final mural image will be designed through a collaborative process with the building owners, curator Glen Blue and Culture Lab. Selected murals will be paid after completion of the project, compensation will be discussed and agreed upon by all parties prior to initiating the community process.
