• Threat of Violence Renewal Questionnaire

  • By renewing the Beazley Deadly Weapons Protection insurance policy, your organization has ensured that critical resources will be brought to bear in a timely way to help your organization manage a threat of violence (The DWP policy covers a ‘circumstance’,  which shall mean a situation, action, event, behaviour, or informaiton received which indicates that a Deadly Weapon Event is reasonably likely to occur.) as well as the aftermath of a critical incident, such as a shooting.  Those critical resources include crisis management and crisis communications support, victim support (e.g., psychological first aid), legal and investigatory services, and social media monitoring.

Although traditional insurance is designed to compensate your organization for financial loss, it will not replace people or repair brand and reputation. It is therefore better to be prepared to prevent an act of violence in the first instance, or where that is not possible, mitigate the harm that results.

Implementing a Violence Protection Program (risk identification, policies, plans, training, and testing) is an initiative that protects employees and all stakeholders.

A significant event of violence will change organizations forever. Consequences must be addressed and managed immediately to achieve the best outcome.

    • Without appropriate resources that are rapidly directed to those employees who were emotionally impacted, turnover will escalate, as people won’t feel safe there anymore.
    • Victims and their families will need assistance. That assistance ranges from the need to provide loved ones with a methodology to communicate—often necessitating the standing up of a call center, help with travel arrangements for family members to come to the side of their loved ones, to grief/trauma counseling and funeral arrangements.
    • Claims will be filed for those injured. While claims on behalf of anyone injured by the deadly weapon are expected, the larger number of claims typically filed are on behalf of those who were injured when they tried to rapidly exit the facility. Without well practiced response protocols—where employees are trained on how to notify, assist and lead an evacuation, chaos ensues, and people are harmed while trying to get away from where they perceive the danger to be.
    • An immediate investigation, separate and apart from the one conducted by law enforcement, is critical. Witnesses disappear quickly—even among your organization’s employee base. While the police will be focused on the crime, your organization’s interests are broader.  Facts need to be known and events need to be understood to protect your organization from civil liability as well as to protect your brand and reputation. Moreover, the investigation needs to be directed by legal counsel to have the opportunity for it be deemed attorney-work product, where privilege attaches.
    • Social media will need to be monitored in the aftermath of the event—both for purposes of brand and reputation protection, e.g., are your organization’s communications effective, as well as for future security threats.

The Beazley Deadly Weapons Protection policy includes an endorsement for ‘Circumstance’.  A circumstance shall mean a situation, action, event, behaviour, or information received which indicates that a Deadly Weapon Event is reasonably likely to occur.

Rarely do acts of violence present without warning.  Warning may come in the form of a direct threat or individuals exhibiting concerning behaviours. These behaviours, once recognized, serve as indications that an individual may be on a path to violence.

Beazley is committed to violence prevention and devotes risk management and crisis management resources to every insured to help manage the threat of violence. Those resources include 24 x 7 x 365 access to CrisisRisk, Beazley’s strategic Partner and the designated risk management and response firm in the deadly weapon protection policy.

When a ‘circumstance’ presents, your organization can call CrisisRisk, 24x7x365, using the telephone # on the face of your policy, to receive immediate support. (If it is believed the threat is imminent, call 9-1-1 before calling CrisisRisk.)   CrisisRisk will help to assess the threat level and provide recommendations.
