• Storying Transition

  • In the previous module, you were asked to:

    • Note down your earliest childhood memory
    • List other childhood, youth and adult memories that are important to you.

    Aim of this module

The aim of this module is to kickstart writing the first chapter of your transition story, then to sketch out what might go in your remaining chapters.

    Overview

In this module, the first exercise is to write about your first childhood memory in as much detail as possible. The reason for doing so is that our childhood memories can be fundamental to our sense of who we are. Describing them in as much detail as possible can enable us to vividly recall the sights, sounds and surroundings associated with that memory. In turn, this can prompt us to begin not just to write our story, but to reveal the personal insight it might provide us.

This module also asks you to sketch out the key themes in what might become the remaining chapters of your transition story; based on the other childhood, teenage and adult memories you noted down in Module 1.

  • If any of these exercises causes you significant upset, you must consider seeking additional and appropriate support.

  • Step 1

In the space below, describe your earliest childhood memory in as much detail as possible. Prompts might include thinking about the sights, sounds and smells you recall, along with details of where you were and who you were with.

Remember, spelling and grammar are not necessarily important. This writing is for you, so it only has to make sense to you. This will become Chapter 1 of your transition story.

  • Step 2

In the spaces below, note down other childhood, teenage and adult memories indicated in Module 1, separating them out as potential additional chapter themes. You may wish to include all, or just some of the memories you noted down in Module 1.

Write any memories you choose to include in the spaces below. Having written about your earliest memory above, you may wish to note your next memory and so on, creating chapters that follow the timeline of your life. Have a go at doing this below (you can change the order here or at any time as your story develops):

  • That is all you need to do for this module, except ensure you download and save your completed PDF (by pressing 'Preview PDF' below), or email it to yourself after pressing 'Submit' below and then confirming you are not a 'robot' and then clicking 'Submit Form'.

Well done on writing the first chapter of your transition story and sketching out the main themes in the rest!

  • Look ahead

In the next module, we will look at what else might go in these chapters.
