2020-2021 NYC Salt Residency Program Application

The Residency Program runs from September to June. This 36-week photography and college preparation program is intended for high school students who wish to deepen their understanding and passion for the visual arts and learn about career paths in the creative industry of NYC.
This is a multi year program and we generally recruit students who are either in their second or third year of high school. Our intention is that you will be in our NYC SALT residency class until you graduate from high school and then will enjoy the benefits of being part of our community throughout your life.
Classes taught by leading industry professionals
One-on-one mentoring with a professional photographer or editor
College prep programs and academic tutoring (if needed)
Five months of small group ACT prep class for Juniors
One-on-one college advising with a professional college counselor
College tours throughout New York
Camera equipment for the duration of your time in the program
Apple Mac lab available to all students every day after school
Instruction on using Adobe Creative Suite (Lightroom and Photoshop)
Introductory lessons on photography as a business
Field trips to creative and cool companies to learn about career paths
Field trips to various NYC locations for photo shoots
In this program, you will learn how to use a camera, how to use light, how to find your vision, how to use your voice to tell a story and more. This will be done through group and one-on-one instruction in a professional photography studio. You will have the opportunity to meet some of the leaders working in the visual industry these days: photographers, gallery owners, photo editors at major magazines, newspapers and online publications, art directors at ad agencies, bookmakers, all people who will become your future professional network and who will be there to help you now and in the future.
You will develop a photography and/or video portfolio that you can use for college admissions and professional opportunities. Your work will be displayed at the end of the year in our Annual Photography Exhibition at a public venue attended by leading industry professionals and your family.
Based on government guidelines we will be teaching classes virtually.
We will hold outdoor classes when possible through the Fall according to the progress of COVID-19 and the CDC's recommendations.
Our studio is in Midtown Manhattan. Our address is 214 West 29th Street #1202, between 7-8th Ave. Please make sure before applying that this location is not too far of a commute for you becuse outdoor classes will be held in the are. Transportation is not provided.
This is a free program.
Our program runs throughout the school year (September to June) following the public school calendar.
Photography classes for new students will be held on Tuesday's 4pm-7pm.
If you are a rising Junior:
From January to June, in addition to their regular NYC SALT class, Juniors will also meet on Wednesdays from 4pm-7pm for college guidance, college workshops and ACT prep.
All students are required to meet twice a month with their mentor.
The attendance policy is strictly enforced.
Please be aware that you cannot save this form. Retreive all supporting requirements (school transcript and photographs to submit) before starting to fill out the form. You should also scroll through the whole application to see what you will be asked to think and write about. We recommend that you give yourself anywhere from several hours to several days to work carefully and thoughtfully on answering the questions.

If you have a grade point average that is below a C, please include a note alongside the trascript you submit explaining your grade. Exceptions can be made.
Only complete applications will be considered.
If your application is selected to move on to the interview stage, you will be contacted to set up a 30-minute interview with us. Your parent or guardian must come with you to this interview in order for you to be eligible for the program. The interview is for us to get to know you a bit better and to also explain the program to your parent or guardian to make sure they understand the commitment required. Application and interview do not guarantee admission into the program.

Also keep in mind that if you are selected to participate in the course, we require a $50 charge to secure your space. The money will go to a hard drive which you will keep at the end of the course. This is the only time you will be asked for money during your time in the program.
