• Mower won’t start-engine will not turn over at all.

     Please confirm each step below.

        Check Safety Switches 

    • Control arms - must be  fully extended
    • Parking brake - must be ON (fully engaged)
    • PTO for blades - must be turned OFF (push button down to disengage)
    • Seat - operator must be sitting on the seat
    • see video above

        Check battery:

    • Confirm cable connections are tight and do not have any loose connections
    • Confirm battery cables are free from corrosion
    • Ensure the battery isn't dead and has adequate charge
  • Mower won’t start, but engine will turn over.

    Please confirm each step below:

    • Make sure the gas tank is at least half full
    • Make sure the engine is not flooded (over choked engine).  Let it sit for an hour and try to start with open throttle and no choke 
    • Verify fuel is fresh
    • In extreme cold conditions may need more choke or leave some choke on when running
    • If slow cranking, this may be a sign of a weak battery.  Please test your battery to ensure adequate charge
  • Blades will not turn on or have difficulty turning on.

    Please confirm each step below:

    • Be sure unit is throttled up first and engine warmed up 
    • Verify deck & belt is free from obstructions and not in tall grass when turning on the blades 
    • Engage blades in top cut then lower the deck 
    • Run the mower with the choke partially on and throttle on ¾ or higher (especially in colder weather) 
  • Mower will start but not drive. 

    Please confirm each step below:

    • Ensure transmissions are NOT disengaged (see owners manual)
    • Ensure that parking brake is OFF (if applicable)
    • Verify that DRIVE belt(s) is not broken or obstructed  
  • Mower won’t drive straight. 

    Please confirm each step below:

    • Ensure tires are properly inflated to Manufacturer specs in manual 
    • Are you driving on Level ground?   Test mower on level ground 
    • Verify that all tires/belts are free from obstructions
    • Ensure that control arms can move fully forward/back 
  • Engine is surging. 

    Please confirm each step below:

    • Verify fuel is fresh 
    • Try adding fuel stabilizer & seafoam and/or new fuel and running engine for 20 min 
    • Ensure fuel filter is free from obvious blockage/debris (Fuel filters are normally only ½ full of fuel) 
    • In extreme cold conditions may need more choke or leave some choke on when running
  • Mower dies or has loss of power

    Please confirm each step below:

    • Is this when the unit is warmed up or cold?  In extreme cold conditions may need more choke or leave some choke on when running the mower.
    • Make sure the throttle is on high
    • Gas begins to break down after 7 days. If gas in the mower older than 7 days, please add stabilizer to the fuel and wait 1 hour and try to start the engine again.
    • Is the air filter clogged/dirty?  If yes, please replace the air filter.
  • Mower is leaking or smoking

    Wait at least 30 minutes for your engine to cool and confirm each step below:

    • Make sure the dipstick/oil cap is tight and secure
    • Check to make sure all hoses are tight fitting and secure
    • Ensure oil is not overfilled
    • Confirm that regular, fresh gasoline is being used (no oil is added)
  • Mower has loss of power.

  • Is the air filter clogged/dirty?  If yes, please replace the air filter.

  • Gas begins to break down after 7 days. Do you have stabilizer in fuel?  

    If no, please add fuel stabilizer into the gas tank, wait an hour and try starting the mower again.

     Caldwell Advantage Customers


    Customer affirms that they have gone through and exhausted all troubleshooting steps as stated above. For all Caldwell Advantage customers who's equipment is current on annual services, transportation of their equipment for failures due to manufacturer defect is covered pending their initial purchase agreement included transportation.
    However, if we diagnose the problem with their mower as user error, customer will be charged for the diagnostics and repairs, as well as any transportation costs for pick up and delivery of the mower.  


    Non-Caldwell Advantage Customers

    Customer affirms that they have gone through and exhausted all troubleshooting steps as stated above. Non-Caldwell Advantage customer understands they will be charged for the diagnostics as well as any transportation costs for pick up and delivery of the mower. Customer will also be charged for repairs - if not covered under manufacturer's factory warranty.  Warranty work performed by Caldwell is limited to Hustler Turf, BigDog, Ferris, Spartan, and Wright factory warranties only.
