• Addressing Racism: A Call to Action for Columbia Faculty - Application for Seed Grant Funding

  • This application is for faculty members and/or academic units within the Columbia community seeking to engage with issues of structural racism. Projects should broaden or deepen understanding of racial inequities that may impact the Columbia community.

    We anticipate that awards will be funded up to $5,000. Projects that are complex, such as interdisciplinary collaborations, can be funded up to $10,000.

    Please Note:

    • Full-time faculty members within the Teachers College and Barnard College communities are also eligible to apply.
    • Institute for Religion, Culture and Public Life will support 1-2 projects that focus in some significant way on the intersection of race and racism, and issues connected to religion, belief and/or secularism.

  • Please upload a narrative description of the proposed project. All proposals must address the following (each section denoted with a separate header):

    • Goals and objectives of the proposed program/event;
    • The program’s ability to broaden or deepen community members’ understanding of issues of, and barriers to, racial justice and equity;
    • Scope of the proposed program. Please describe how the program allows for interdisciplinary collaboration that spans beyond activity within the applying academic unit(s);
    • Scalability, or potential for expansion, of the program/event;
    • Possibility for the program/event to attract a range of university; constituents, from those who have significant interest in issues of racial justice, to those who have demonstrated limited engagement with such issues in the past;
    • Proposed timeline for program development and execution.

  • Budget Narrative and Projection

  • Each proposal must include a budget narrative and justification. Below, please upload a budget narrative/justification, and table that details budget projections for total costs. The budget table must include a breakdown of funds that are being requested of the Office of the Provost and those that being made available through your academic unit(s). For each item, please specify type of cost (e.g., personnel, supplies) and provide a description.
