First Coaching Session with Matt Mochary
  • First Coaching Session with Matt Mochary

  • Before starting the coaching process, I suggest you read my book, The Great CEO Within (Amazon). If the book resonates with you, then you will benefit from my coaching.

The book takes several hours to read. It will give you an overview of the tools you and Matt will implement together.

If you're not ready to buy the book, you can read an older version of the book online for free here.

Come back to this page and click "Begin Coaching" when you're ready to get started. We're excited to meet you!

  • Habits and Agreements (Step 1/16)

Let's get clear on the habits we'd like to build together, and on how exactly the coaching process works.
  • First, please read the wiki entry on being On Time and Present. It takes about 3 minutes to read.

  • Next, please read the wiki entry on the importance of setting a daily Top Goal. It takes about 3 minutes to read.

  • Lastly, please read Steps 1-5 of my Coaching Methodology. It takes about 3 minutes to read.

  • Now that you're clear on the coaching process, let's get started! First, I would like to know a little more about you.

  • About You: Basic Info (Step 2/16)

Let's start with your basic information.
  •  - -
  • About You: Relationships (Step 3/16)

Share some information about the important people in your life.
  • For me, coaching is about creating a deep personal connection. I want to become close friends with you. I want you to know about me as a human. And I want to know about you as a human.

Here is some personal information about me. I want to share it with you because he's committed to building a personal connection with you.

Now, please share some of your own personal information.

  • About You: Personality (Step 4/16)

Now, share some more personal things about yourself. You can jot these down, no need to spend more than five minutes filling out this page.
  • Your Company: People (Step 5/16)

Please share some basic information about the people in your company.
  • Your Company: Financials (Step 6/16)

Please share some financial information about your company.
  • Your Company: Documents (Step 7/16)

Please share your company's pitch deck and board packet with me. Reviewing these documents allows me to ingest a lot of information about your company before we meet. This way, you don't need to spend time explaining what your company does to me.

  • Magical Outcome (Step 8/16)

Here, I want you to allow yourself to dream about the best possible outcome from my coaching. If I, Matt Mochary, were truly a magician, what would I help you achieve?
  • Your Gratitudes (Step 9/16)

One of the fundamental tenets of my coaching is that our brains work best when we are in a state of joy and excitement. Furthermore, our brains work worst when we are in a state of fear or anger. Let's get into a state of joy by celebrating how good life really is!
  • Want to learn more? Read the Wiki entry on how Fear and Anger give bad advice.

  • Your Goals and Actions (Step 10/16)

Now, let’s get to work on setting goals and taking action on those goals.
  • List up to three great outcomes you would like to accomplish by the end of the upcoming quarter. You can write these in Goal or OKR style.

  • For each goal, think of the next action that you can take in the next week to significantly advance toward completion of that goal. This action should be something both specific and under your control. For example, "Ask Jake to meet to discuss proposal," "Draft ideas for board meeting agenda," etc.

  • Your Issues (Step 11/16)

Great work! Now let's dig deeper. There are challenges in your life right now. These are things that make you angry or cause you to feel fear. You will describe two issues you are facing in your company life and one issue you are facing in your personal life.
  • I am going to ask you to write out the issues you are facing according to the following format:

    (1) The Issue.

    Describe the problem.

    (2) What did you do to help create this situation?

If I wanted to get myself into the exact same position that you are in now, what steps would I have to take? This is an important question to ask to change your perspective from “the problem is caused by someone else and therefore can only be solved by someone else” to “this problem was in part caused by me, therefore there are things that I can do to unwind it”.

    (3) What is your proposed solution?

If you have truly written out how you helped create the situation, then you now likely see the steps needed to back out of the situation. Either way, please write all the specific actions that you would prescribe to solve this issue. Even if you have no confidence in your solution, write it out anyway. It is much more effective for me to react to your proposed solution, than it is for me to invent a solution for you. For each action, please list who will do it, and by when they will do it.

  • Your Issues: Company Issue #1 (Step 12/16)

Please share one issue you're facing in your company right now.
  • Your Issues: Company Issue #2 (Step 13/16)

Please share a second issue you're facing in your company right now.
  • Your Issues: Personal Issue (Step 14/16)

Please share one issue you're facing in your personal life.
  • Additional Information (Step 15/16)

Great work! We're almost done. Please let me know if there is anything else you would like to discuss together.
  • You Did It! (Step 16/16)

Thanks for making it all the way here. You are now ready for your first meeting with me. Thank you, I am looking forward to meeting you!
