    Stanford White Awards Submission Form and Instructions

  • The Stanford White Awards are a project-centric regional awards program of the Institute of Classical Architecture & Art, recognizing excellence in classical and traditional architecture, design, and craftsmanship in New York, New Jersey, and Fairfield County, Connecticut. Laureates are selected annually by a jury of peers in the design professions through a blind adjudication process.

  • Award Categories

  • RESIDENTIAL ARCHITECTURE

    Projects in this category encompass all architectural work that is residential in use, including single-family and multi-unit housing, and projects in rural, suburban, and urban environments.

    Projects may be submitted in the following sub-categories:

    -    Houses – New Construction Under 5,000 sq. ft.

    -    Houses – New Construction Over 5,000 sq. ft.

    -    Houses – Renovations & Additions (please make clear delineation between ‘before’ and ‘after’)

    -    Townhouses & Apartments

    -    Ancillary Structures (projects that work in support of a larger structure or development)

    -    Multi-Unit Projects

     

    COMMERCIAL, CIVIC, AND INSTITUTIONAL ARCHITECTURE

    Projects in this category encompass all architectural work that is non-residential in use.

     

    INTERIOR DESIGN

    Projects in this category focus on the interior design and decoration of spaces, and will be judged on the quality of the work independent of the interior architecture.

    Projects may be submitted in the following sub-categories:

    -    Houses

    -    Townhouses & Apartments

    -    Commercial, Civic, & Institutional

    -    One Room (projects should focus on a single interior room or space)

     

    LANDSCAPE DESIGN

    Projects in this category encompass all work associated with the landscape and natural environment, and may be located in rural, suburban, and urban contexts.

     

    HISTORIC PRESERVATION

    Projects in this category recognize achievement in restoration, preservation, and adaptive reuse of historic structures of high architectural caliber. Entrants should demonstrate the process as well as the finished product.

     

    CRAFTSMANSHIP AND ARTISANSHIP

    Projects in this category represent works of arts and crafts created as a permanent element of an architectural project. Entrants should be directly involved in the specific design or execution of the work.

     

    STUDENT PROJECTS

    Projects in this category should represent work completed in an academic setting within the past 5 years. Active students may submit projects located in New York, New Jersey, or Fairfield County, Connecticut. Recent graduates who are currently employed at an ICAA member firm in the awards region may submit any student project, regardless of location.

     

  • Eligibility

  • Projects must conform to one of two eligibility requirements:

    Either Option 1:

    Projects must be geographically located within the region encompassing New York, New Jersey, and Fairfield County, Connecticut. Entrants are not required to be based within these borders.

    Or Option 2:

    Entrants must be based within the region encompassing New York, New Jersey, and Fairfield County, Connecticut. Projects may be located in any geographic location or region.

     

  • All projects, excepting those in the Student Project categories, must have been completed after January 1st, 2010.

    All entrants must be members of the ICAA.

  • Schedule

  • The project submission deadline is close of business on October 2, 2020.

  • Submission Instructions

    All projects must be submitted electronically. No physical submissions will be accepted.

    All applicants must complete the following for each project submission:

    1)      Online entry form

    2)      Project Abstract: PDF, 2 pages; see below for details

    3)      Project Presentation: PDF, 20 pages (max); see below for details

    This is to be a PDF document of 2 single-sided pages that serves as brief overview of the project. Each page should be 8.5”x11” in portrait orientation, and is to have minimal formatting. One page should include the Project Title, which should not reveal ownership, and the Project Description (no more than one-half page of text). The remaining space may be used for drawings or images that quickly express the scope of the project. Captions may be included as desired. Please see the sample abstract here.

    (3) Project Presentation

    This is to be a PDF document of no more than 20 single-sided pages that documents the project. Each page should be no larger than 8.5”x11”, but orientation is at the entrant’s discretion. The first page should include the Project Title, which should not reveal ownership, and the Project Description, which should encompass no more than one-half page of text. The remaining space may be used for as many drawings or images as desired. Captions should be included where appropriate. Entrants should craft the Presentation to give as full a description of the project and their scope and involvement as possible. Architectural submissions are encouraged to include drawings such as site plans, floor plans, elevations, sections, and or details. Projects in the ‘Houses – Renovations & Additions’ sub-category should document the ‘before’ state as well as the ‘after’ and make clear, by description or diagram, the extent of work. Projects in the ‘Historic Preservation’ or ‘Craftsmanship and Artisanship’ categories are encouraged to include process images. Projects located within, around, or adjacent to an existing building should include an exterior photo of the building for reference. Please see the sample presentation here.

     

    Adjudication is blind; please do not include identifying names in the Project Abstract or Project Presentation.

     

    Entrants must have permission to use all photography and/or printed material contained within the submission. Winning entrants will be contacted individually for high-quality source files for inclusion within the Awards presentation and booklet. The ICAA reserves the right to use all materials contained within the submission in future printed and digital media for promotion purposes.

  • Fees

  • Entry fees for all submissions are $100, excepting Student Projects, for which the fee is $25. There is no limit to the number submitted as long as each submission fits the requirements as stated. The same project may be submitted in multiple categories as appropriate; please note that each entry should include an entry form, Abstract, and Presentation. Projects previously submitted for past Awards years, but not selected as laureates, may be resubmitted so long as they continue to meet the requirements as stated. Entry fees may be submitted electronically here. Fees may also be paid by check via mail. Checks may be made out to the Institute of Classical Architecture & Art (ICAA).
