Summary of M.Arch Transfer Credit and Course Substitution Policies
To be used towards an M.Arch course substitution, prior courses must carry a grade of B- or better, and must not have been applied to a prior degree. Courses must have been taken at schools with NAAB-accredited programs (NAAB.org) or other graduate or undergraduate level architecture programs. A prior course must also achieve parity in content and NAAB student performance criteria as the MassArt M.Arch requirement to which it is being compared. Only graduate credit may be transferred into the M.Arch program, but undergraduate level credit may be used towards course exemptions or course waivers.
Transfer Credit granted in both Track I and II for graduate level courses on a graduate transcript only - reduces the M.Arch credit load.
Course Exemptions granted in the Track I program only, primarily for undergraduate courses - reduce the M.Arch credit load.
Course Waivers granted in both Track I and II, primarily for undergraduate courses, must be replaced by additional graduate level courses - do not reduce the M.Arch credit load.
Track I may transfer or grant course exemptions or waivers for up to 15 credits of prior coursework, and up to 6 credits of portfolio or experience for a total of 21 possible credits. The program requires 102 graduate credits with a minimum of 81 MassArt graduate credits when 21 credits are substituted.
Track II may transfer up to 6 graduate credits. The program requires 60 graduate credits with a minimum of 54 MassArt graduate credits when 6 graduate credits are transferred.
