STANDARDS
- Students are required to be ready for class by 8.45am.
- Students are to be punctual for all school functions.
- Students are expected to behave in an orderly manner at all times.
- Students are expected to be polite and helpful to visitors.
- All litter and recycling must be placed in the bins provided.
- Any student who is late to school for any reason must sign in using Vistab located at the school office.
- When it is necessary for a student to leave the school during school hours, parents must sign out their son/daughter at the school office. The student is to sign themselves in if they return during the school day.
- Smoking, vaping, drinking alcohol and drug taking are forbidden. Any student breaking this rule is liable for the most serious consequences, including exclusion/expulsion.
- Students must not directly contact their parents during the school day to collect them.
- Any student who brings Whitby Collegiate into disrepute at any time will be held accountable.
BOUNDS
The following areas and equipment are OUT OF BOUNDS except with the express permission of a staff member:
- The public walkway and the school carpark other than Rooms 9 and 10.
- All areas of trees and/or bush surrounding the school. Permission must be sought from the teacher on duty to retrieve balls.
- The main entrance to the school and foyer area outside the designated times.
- Upstairs in the main block.
- Specialist rooms, including Labs 1 & 2, Rooms 4, 5, 6, and 15, without staff supervision or permission.
- Behind the counter in the school tuck shop.
- Teachers’ offices or resource rooms without permission.
- Musical instruments, audio-visual equipment, computers in classrooms and other mechanical or electrical equipment without permission.
- All telephones except for the phone located in the school office (including cellphones).
- The creek and its surrounds.
CELLPHONES
Cell phones should only be brought to school for emergency purposes. They should be switched off and kept in a secured locker. Any mobile phone will be confiscated if seen during school hours (8:45am and 3:15pm) regardless of whether it is switched on or off. Other electronic devices may be confiscated at the discretion of a staff member. Confiscated items are clearly labelled and kept in the school office. They can be picked up at the end of the school day.
In general we would advise that your son/daughter do not bring anything valuable to school.
BANNED ARTICLES
None of the following may be brought to school: Chewing gum, cigarettes, vapes, matches, alcohol, fireworks, drugs, pocket knives, or studded wrist bands.
ABSENCE
If a student is unwell and unable to attend school, parents/caregivers must ring the school absence line (04) 234 7567 or (04) 234 1070 ext 1 or email absences@whitbycollegiate.school.nz between 8:00 am-8:30 am each day their son/daughter is absent.
Any student who is absent through sickness or injury for more than one day must bring a note of explanation to his/her tutor teacher on the day s/he returns. A doctor’s certificate must be produced for absences of more than three days.
Wherever possible, medical or dental appointments should be made outside of school hours. When absence for this reason is necessary an appointment card or letter should be shown to the tutor teacher in advance of the appointment. Parents must sign their son/daughter out at the school office when leaving the school.
Absence for reasons other than sickness is not normally permitted and special permission must be sought from the Executive Principal well in advance and in writing.
SICKNESS
Any student becoming ill during the day must report to the school office in the first instance. If such action is warranted, parents will be notified and arrangements made to send the student home.
BREAK AND LUNCH PROCEDURE
No student may leave the school grounds during morning break or lunch, or at any other time during the day without permission.
Senior students (Years 12 & 13) may go to the Whitby shops at lunch times; they must sign in and out of school using the Sign Out tablet at the school office.
SPECIAL BUILDINGS
Special regulations govern the conduct of students in certain areas, such as Room 15 (ICT), Room 5 (Music), Room 6 (Art) and Science Labs, and these must be observed.
No student should be in a science lab without a staff member.
OUTSIDE
- Correct and neat uniform must be worn in the street.
- Behaviour on buses, trains and in the street must be quiet, courteous and orderly.
- Stand in line for buses and wait your turn when boarding the bus. Ensure younger students board first and are seated at the front.
BEHAVIOUR IN CLASS
- Be punctual and prepared for class.
- Respect is expected at all times between staff and students.
- Students should stand whenever an adult enters the classroom.
- Students are responsible for their own behaviour and actions.
- The classroom should be tidy. Desks are not to be moved in any classroom unless instructed by a member of staff. Bags should not be in aisles between desks.
- Books should not be on windowsills or on top of lockers, and books may not be left on the floor outside classrooms.
- Students’ appearance in class should be neat. Students must change back into their school uniform after PE lessons, unless they have sports training straight after school.
- No telephoning is to be done in class time without permission from a staff member. Telephone calls should be made at Morning Tea and lunchtime in the school office.
- Homework is to be done on time and neatly presented.
- Students are not to sit on desks or tables
PROPERTY
- Students may not use the property of others. All clothing, watches, wallets and pens must be marked clearly with the owner’s name.
- All valuable possessions must be safely locked in student lockers during the day.
- School property must not be defaced.
