Gender Affirmative Therapy in a Relational Context

Summary: Transgender and gender diverse people have become more visible in our society. Many transgender and gender diverse people are finding courage to live their lives authentically, likely due to increased visibility and acceptance. Providing affirmative care to decrease stigma and validate transgender and gender diverse people’s experience assists in improving their lives exponentially. This training will provide information on how to better serve transgender and gender diverse children, adolescents, adults, and their families. The focus of this training will be to provide an overview of the gender affirmative model and how to work with clients from a relational framework.
1. Become familiar with approaches to working with gender diversity.
2. Become familiar with the Gender Affirmative Model.
3. Develop a greater understanding of the mental health provider’s role.
4. Discuss specific challenges when working with clients and their loved ones.
5. Develop a list of resources specific to gender diversity.
About the Presenter:
Adam A. Sauceda is a Licensed Professional Counselor – Supervisor and Registered Play Therapist who has over 19 years of experience working in the mental health field. His main focus for the past 6 years has been working with transgender and gender diverse individuals. His training and clinical application has afforded him the opportunity to provide expert witness testimony regarding gender diversity. He also provides gender affirmative training and consultation to mental health professionals to ensure transgender and gender diverse people are provided with quality, affirming care. He is a member of the World Professional Association for Transgender Health (WPATH) and routinely follows the WPATH Standards of Care 7th Ed. in his clinical practice.
