Statement from Tony Herbert
Dear Greg, I believe Peter Sycopoulis has organised an opportunity for a photo and article for Saturday Paper. If there is an opportunity to include some of these sentences I would appreciate. I believe he has also supplied some comments and these can be used as additional if required. Three months ago and according to the formal performance measures set out by council, WCC CEO Peter Schneider had the full support of the council as they endorsed his performance plan and KPI’s unanimously. A CPI pay increase was also endorsed, but deferred by the CEO. The CEO is addressing a number of current and historical challenges in Council and after only 17 months in the Chair has made progress and we believe needs to be given time and support to deliver on the plan councillors and the community have set. In these very disruptive and challenging times the last thing WCC and the community needs is potentially further uncertainty and unnecessary challenges. During these times of the world-wide pandemic leaders including local leaders have called on their respective communities to look out for each other and be supportive of every member in that community. Challenging times needs stable, secure and steady leadership and this is what WCC is experiencing currently. The special CEO employment committee, of which we three represent the full council, has managed the CEO and recommended to the council that the performance be endorsed and supported. The council has done this. Another unanimous decision of council was appointing the CEO only 17 months ago where we offered full support in the role he was to undertake. A key role of the Council is to appoint and manage the CEO. We believe all councillors are aware that there are significant ramifications for our City if the suggestions are correct around the speculation regarding the tenure of the CEO. We would also hope an added influence should be in councillors minds about the significant financial costs around such action. Our city is forging ahead as best it can through these tough financial times and any added unexpected and significant expenditure would be viewed extremely poorly by our community. Tony Herbert
