Swinburne Emergency Fund

About Us:

The Student Emergency Fund outlines the primary objective in providing emergency financial assistance to students of Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak, who are unable to meet immediate and essential expenses due to temporary hardships related to situations beyond their control. The fund is a one-off assistance, not intended to replace nor act as a supplement for financial aid. The fund is awarded in line as an endowment, and unlike a loan does not require/need to be reimbursed.

What We Fund:

1. Bereavement Support (Death of parents/guardian)

In the case of a temporary cease in allowance within the recent bereavement support, as previously, the parents or guardian were the sole breadwinner or provider in the family.

2. Natural Disaster or Pandemic Relief

In the case of the applicant and his/her family are affected by natural disaster or pandemic (i.e. flood, tsunami, earthquake, COVID-19, MERS3, SARS4) and allowances are temporarily ceased.

3. Transportation cost for emergencies

In the case of when the applicant need funds for transportation costs (i.e. flight ticket, express boat ticket, bus ticket) to return home due to emergency-related cases (i.e. parents/guardian’s death, natural disaster, fire). With the condition that the applicant’s allowances are temporarily ceased due to the emergency.

4. Emergency Cases (Involving accidents and/or medical expenses)

In the case of when the applicant has exceeded the amount in the medical card or insurance coverage and the applicant’s allowances have been temporarily ceased due to unfortunate incidents/situations.
To assist the applicant who is unfit to pay for the hospital admission fees and gain essentials (i.e. groceries and toiletries) due to the bed-ridden/ unconscious state, mentally unfit, and/or ongoing self-quarantine as per agreed by the University.

5. Incidents Beyond Control (Robbery, Snatch theft, fire and other incidents

In the case of the applicant experiencing unfortunate incidents and in need of funds for daily allowances.

Eligibility:

The applicant must be enrolled in Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak Campus on a Full-Time basis or equivalent.
The applicant must be physically in Kuching, Sarawak during the occurrence of this temporary financial hardship.
Applicant must be able to provide enough documentation/evidence/proof (i.e. account statement, bank letter, newspaper on natural disaster) of temporary financial hardships.
After the application has sought out all alternate avenues/resources had been exhausted and found to be unavailable.
The applicant had not previously applied for SEF during his/her period of study.
Exceptions to the above requirements will be considered in a case-by-case scenario and as per recommended by the Assistant Manager, Student Life and for Registrar and Director, Student Engagement approval.

Types of expenses that are not covered under this fund;

Health Insurance Premium;
Outstanding tuition fees; any fees related to enrolment and examination,
Fines or restitution owed from criminal or court cases; and
Accommodation fees (both on-campus and off-campus)
