    Losing your pet is stressful - both for you and your pet.

    If you believe your pet is at our shelter, please walk through the kennels at our shelter frequently to assure your pet is not at ACS. Don’t walk through the shelter just once; it is recommended you walk through at least every other day.

    If your pet is licensed or microchipped with correct contact information; we will attempt to contact you so you can be reunited with your pet. It is vitally important any phone numbers connected to your pet’s license or microchip are on file and up to date.

    NOTE:

    Please complete the information below in full so that we may assist in comparing the pet in our care with your missing pet. 

    • Once submitted, you will receive a confirmation of receipt and additional information to include other resources to assist in your search, will be sent to the email address you provided.
    • As a high volume shelter, we will be unable to review missing pets in detail and highly recommend the owner to come down to our shelter to identify the pet in person as soon as possible.

    Please understand that our staff may not be able to visibly compare pictures of your pet with pets in the shelter. The owner is the best identifier of the pet. Please complete the information below so that we may send it out to our staff.

    Do not wait for a response from San Antonio Animal Care Services if you beieve your pet is at our shelter. Go to the shetler as soon as possible as pets are only held for 3 - 5 days.

    • Resources to Assist in Searching for a Lost Pet 

    • Microchip:

      If your pet is licensed or microchipped with correct contact information; we will attempt to contact you so you can be reunited with your pet. It is vitally important any phone numbers connected to your pet’s license or microchip are on file and up to date.

      • If you need to locate the microchip number contact the organization who implanted the chip. 
      • If you have the chip number and need to check the registration go to www.microchiplookup.com and input the chip number to retrieve the company the chip is registered too.

      Website Search:

      • Proceed to www.petharbor.com to see all new pets brought in SA ACS and surrounding shelters. 

      Post Flyers:

      • Utilize Lost Dogs Of Texas on Facebook or their website. www.lostdogsoftexas.net to create a flyer and post on social media.
      • Post flyers in your neighborhood, yard, local schools, stores, community centers, or any local neighborhood Facebook groups.

      Nextdoor:

      • Post the flyer on the Nextdoor App

      Other Shelters:

      • Visit Animal Defense League at adltexas.org or San Antonio Humane Society at sahumane.org.
      • Visit responding shelter in your area.

    Animal Care Services has made historic strides as our community progresses towards becoming more humane. You can be a part of the solution by promoting responsible pet ownership, choosing to adopt (and not shop), as well as reducing the roaming animal population by ensuring pets are sterilized and properly contained on your property. 

      

    Adoptions are processed on a first come, first served basis

    This means that they may not be available by the time you can come meet them, so we encourage you to come to the shelter immediately if you see a pet you are interested in.  

    • ACS may know very little about the pets in our care as many are strays who recently came to us. We may be unable to provide detailed temperment information. 
    • We require that all adopters come to the shelter to meet the pets. You will need to come BEFORE the pets stray hold ends, which is listed on Petharbor, to prevent euthanasia.
    • The pet may no longer be available by the time you can come meet them, so we encourage you to schedule an appointment to interact as soon as possible. 

    GUIDELINES ONSITE

    • Please only allow adults (18+) to hold the leashes of dogs
    • We recommend sensible shoes for walking on grass, going through a kennel and interacting with pets.  

    ADDRESS 

    • We are located at 4710 Texas Highway 151, San Antonio TX 78227; next to the San Antonio Food Bank.

    ADOPTION PROCESS 

    • Our adoption fees range from $25 to $86 for dogs and $15 to $34 for cats depending on the status of the animal - or lower If there is a special. 
    • All adoptions include the spay/neuter surgery, microchip, heartworm test and prevention, flea/tick prevention, and vaccines.  
    • You will need a valid government issued ID as well as payment for the adoption fee.  
      • The adoption fee is due the same day and is what holds your adoption, so we cannot make exceptions.  
    • We require that you spend at least 30 minutes interacting with the pet before we will review you for adoption.

    IMPORTANT: We are the City of San Antonio's municipal animal shelter and an open-intake facility. If our shelter becomes too full, euthanasia for capacity can occur.

    • When will your pet go Home? 

    • Most pets are not ready to go home the same day, so plan on returning to the shelter for pick up. If your pet is ready to go home the same day, you will be expected to take them home once payment is made on the same day.  

      If your pet is not ready, we will provide you with a pick-up date at the time of adoption. A pick-up time will be given to you by telephone on the date your pet is ready to go.  

    • Do you have Pets at Home? 

    • We also highly encourage you to bring your current pets and (with caution) any small children who live in the home to meet the pup, to make sure everyone will get along! If bringing your personal pet, please make sure to bring another adult with you to assist in holding your personal pet.

      PLEASE NOTE: If you want to bring your current pet to meet their potential new roommate, your pet must be current on the following vaccines: 

      • DHPP (booster) 
      • Bordatella (for kennel cough) 
      • Rabies (annual, state required) 

      We have unvaccinated stray's that enter our shelter daily, so if your pet is not up to date on their vaccinations, you may be putting them at risk of picking up transmissible diseases. Please bring your most current vet records for verification purposes.

    • Petharbor is the website that hosts all of the pets who come into our shelter and are available during their stray hold for owners to reclaim or adoption, foster, or rescue. 

      We have worked closely with 24PetConnect to provide the most up to date information on the pet you may be interested in and important time lines. 

      When navigating through 24PetConnect directly or through the ACS website, the description will tell you important details:

      1. The 6-Digit AID of the pet.
      2. Where the pet is physically located.
      3. The date the pet must be reclaimed by the owner, adopted, fostered, or transferred to a rescue organization.

  • Fostering

    Animal Care Services is one of the top ten largest intake shelters in the country. We have a 90%+ Live Release Rate every month, but it is only because of dedicated caring people in our community, like you!

    Why foster?

    Fostering is a wonderful experience for those who want to help animals. It is a great way to open your home to the compassion of caring for animals in need, and it’s also a great way to see what different pets work well in your home. Many fosters have found a perfect companion by opening their home to those animals in need. Fostering will fill your heart with love and inspiration and it will make a big difference in our community. Seeing pets that didn’t have any other options find wonderful homes is one of most fulfilling jobs you’ll ever have!

    Most of our many pets just need a little more time to find their forever home. Being a foster family has rewards beyond the essential value of helping a pet in need find a new home. For some, it is a chance to have an animal companion without a lifetime commitment. For others, it is the special challenge of helping an animal recover from an illness or injury, the trauma of losing a beloved owner or home, or to overcome a behavioral issue. Occasionally, it’s the joy of giving extra TLC to kittens and puppies too young to be adopted.

    The number of animals we can save depends entirely on the number of people who open their homes and hearts to foster them.

    • What is a foster home for ACS? 
      • A foster home is a temporary living situation for pets in our program while they are awaiting placement in a permanent home or transfer to an ACS approved rescue partner.
      • Foster families provide a home, care and love. While we will provide you with everything else, such as a crate, toys, food, and medical care!   
      • Most fosters will stay in foster care for an average of 1-2 months though many get adopted far sooner than that. However, depending on the need there are a few that may be in care longer due to the age, illness, injury or behavior.
    • Types of Foster Families 

    • Capacity

      • Some pets just ran out of time here at the shelter due to space availability and need someone to advocate for them and help find a new home. Many of these are amazing sweet pets that simply got overlooked and with great pictures and more information in a home get adopted quickly.

      Orphan gruel and bottle babies

      • These are kittens or puppies that need 1-8 weeks of care till old enough for surgery and adoption. Typically these babies have no trouble getting adopted; they just need a loving home to raise them.

      Sick/Injured/Behavior Animals

      • Depending on the medical treatment or behavior some of these pets may take longer to be adoptable. Our vets and trainers are here to help walk you through getting them healthy and ready for adoption.

      Transport

      • Animals that need two weeks of care while waiting to leave on transport to other rescue/shelter partners – Not yet available but coming soon!
    • What are the responsibilities of a foster family? 
      • Be able to go to ACS to meet your potential foster pet
        Provide safe, humane, INDOOR housing for your foster pet until they are adopted (sometimes only a few days, sometimes weeks or a few months)
      • Provide safe transport to and from the clinic at ACS to have your foster checked on a monthly basis (Monday - Thursday 2-4pm)
      • Use the internet and social media to market and otherwise actively seek out a permanent home for your foster pet.
      • Keep the foster rescue staff updated of any changes regarding your foster pet and provide updated pictures and a biography about your foster pet at least once/month while the pet is in your care.
      • Be available via email or phone to respond to potential adopters who have questions about your foster pet.
