Call for Proposals:
Mariani Gallery is currently accepting proposals for short-term (2 week), intensive residencies for PVA students seeking space to conceptualize, research, and make artwork in relationship to a theme of your choosing. Potential themes to explore include, but are not limited to: Social consciousness, Time, Place, Identity, Social justice and Space. The goal of this residency opportunity is to develop new and original artwork unrelated to one's current coursework. Students are encouraged to apply for a two-week residency slot with the expectation that by the conclusion of their program, they will have completed and installed one work in Mariani Gallery along with accompanying trace material showing their artistic process (Examples: sketches, reading materials, thumbnails, etc). At the end of their residency, artwork and trace material will be left in the exhibition and a culmination exhibition will take place of all resident’s artworks at the end of the residency period.
This residency will also offer mentorship and critique opportunities to aid in professional development. Each residency cohort will participate in one group critique, led by SoAD faculty, Visiting Artists and/or the Gallery Director. Individual mentorship sessions are also available and encouraged for each artist. Meetings will take place either in person or digitally.
Safety is a priority during your residency. Any student may elect to utilize the residency remotely, or with light attendance, as long as this is communicated in the application. Students will follow the same parameters as an in-person residency and coordinate a drop-off/shipment of their artwork and trace materials to Mariani Gallery at the end of their two-week session for inclusion in the cumulative exhibition. The exhibition will also be featured online at https://soaddigitalgallery.com/ and the Digital UNC Repository.
All participants must adhere to University policies regarding mask wearing, social distancing and limited occupancy caps on classroom/workspaces. For information on UNC’s comprehensive COVID Prevention, visit: https://www.unco.edu/return-to-campus/prevention/
Mariani Gallery has an occupancy cap of 28 people. This number will change as artwork and pedestals are installed in the space. Students will be kept up to date on occupancy changes as the semester progresses.
