Dear Prospective Returning Student,
This information and application provided below is the first step in returning to your academic goals at Medgar Evers College. We, the Academic Review & Appeal Committee (ARAC), part of the Student Persistence & Retention Services, are here to support you in this pursuit.
All students who have been academically dismissed or who have voluntarily left the college while failing to maintain a minimum GPA of a 2.0 must file a Petition for Reinstatement to determine re-admission eligibility to the College. Please be aware that outcomes are not guaranteed, therefore it is important to submit a strong and complete petition.
Please be advised:
- ARAC has no authority with overdue balances or grade appeals
- Paying off any outstanding CUNY balance is a requirement prior to re-admission
- If you have only attended MEC for ONE semester, please contact our office or the Admissions Office for more information
Petition for Reinstatment Filing Periods:
Jan. 15 through Mar. 15 - For FALL semester return consideration
May 15 through Jun. 15 - For FALL semester return consideration (Late period)
Sept. 1 through Nov. 15 - For SPRING semester return consideration
Student "Holds":
Bursar holds, SPARC holds, and Dean of Student (DOS) holds must all be addressed and settled before any returning student is permitted to re-admit to the College, and overrides an approved petition for reinstatement. To settle bursar holds contact bursar@mec.cuny.edu. To settle SPARC and DOS holds contact Director of Community Standards/Student Conduct Officer at kadams@mec.cuny.edu.
Finacial Aid:
Prospective returning students anticipating federal financial aid should complete their FAFSA application now, regardless of the outcome of their petition. If their petition is approved, then a student would have to file a SAP Appeal to determine financial aid reinstatement. https://studentaid.gov/h/apply-for-aid/fafsa. (Financial Aid reinstatement is NOT guaranteed)
Once the Petition for Reinstatement APPLICATION is submitted (below), all supporting documents (scans, PDFs, Word docs, only) should be emailed in one email to arac@mec.cuny.edu. This will include:
1. Personal Statement of Appeal (required) – a letter addressed to the committee explaining the reasons for past poor academic performance. Furthermore, let the committee know what actions you have taken since leaving the college, which might support your ability to handle college-level work. Lastly, outline the actions you plan to take in the future, if permitted a return to the college, that will ensure your academic success.
2. Supporting Documents (optional, highly recommended where relevant) – Copies of any documents that may support claims made in the personal statement of appeal, such as: medical documents, court rulings, eviction notices, death certificates, birth certificates, etc.). Also include transcripts (non-official is fine) from other educational institutions which you may have attended during your hiatus from MEC.
Once we receive the application submission, personal statement of appeal, and any supporting documents, your petition will then be complete.
Be advised that the petition for reinstatement is for the designated semester, noted below. If approved, the student must then begin their re-admisison and re-enrollment. However, if student delays their return for more than a year, then a new petition for reinstatement will be required.
Any outstanding questions may be addressed to the ARAC unit, via the phone number below.
Sincerely,
Academic Review & Appeal Committee (ARAC)
