Puppy Information Sheet
DeeJae background
Bit of background on us, you may have read on our DogzOnline page, while DeeJae is a relatively new Samoyed prefix, our family have owned, breed and shown Samoyeds since the 1980’s. We have just recently updated our kennel profile with the joining of a father and daughter show team forming the new DeeJae Samoyeds kennel.
We are a small kennel who only breed when we are after a new bundle of fluff for our own show team so only have limited puppies available for sale. When we are considering a litter, we look carefully at not only the possible mum & dad, but also back a number of generations to see if they are compatible and if there are any historic health concerns. This ‘line breeding’ helps to ensure that all puppies are healthy, suitably matched and should make great family members.
Puppies
All Samoyeds in our kennel undergo full health checks including hip/elbow scores, eye tests, liver testing, DNA profiles just to name a few. Puppies also are fully vet health checked, vaccinated and wormed before they leave us. While there never any guarantees, this helps us ensure that every puppy has the best chance of a long and health life with their new family. Copies of all health tests of puppies & parents are provided in your puppy packs.
If the time comes that we have a puppy for your family, you will usually be able to meet both mum and dad and spend some time with the other fluffies from DeeJae to ensure you can see the different personalities of these guys and how they will fit into your family.
Depending on individual circumstances, you may be able to meet the puppies from about 3-4 weeks old, we are very cautious of visitors, protecting out babies from any outside bugs they may pick up, prior to vaccinations they are very susceptible to many things until vaccinations kick in.
While we may be able to confirm at around 2-3 weeks that we have a puppy which we can reserve for you, we may not be able to confirm which actual puppy in the litter this will be until a bit older. This is due to the development time of some puppies when we are looking to select our own little show bundle of fluff we look for a number of factors, some of which can be personality, a you may understand these personalities don’t emerge for a few weeks.
Once you have been confirmed as a new family for a DeeJae fluff baby and paid your deposit, you will be provided access to CCTV which is on 24/7 so you can watch your little one grow and develop. Careful, this CCTV has been known to take over people’s lives . In the past families have loved the opportunity to check in anytime (including 2:00 am), it has especially suited interstate and overseas families who are unable to visit their little one in person.
Waiting Lists
We don’t hold a waiting list, although we do hold onto the details of people interested in getting a Samoyed puppy. In the past we have found with our waiting lists that by the time we have a litter many have organised a puppy from elsewhere, which is great news. Instead when we do know there is a litter due, we make contact with you and share our good news to check in if you are still interested in a puppy. It’s at this time we put together a list of who is still interested and start to see who will match the current litter based on gender and suitability.
Support
At DeeJae we provide support to many Samoyed owners in the area, many of those with dogs from other breeders. We work to help owners with training, grooming, bathing and just answering questions about their dog. We have long standing relationships with other breeders, many of whom are interstate, so we help by having someone local you can turn to when you need a hand. If you do end up with a puppy from another breeder, please feel free to stay in touch with DeeJae if you need any assistance, guidance or just someone to talk to about your fluffy baby.
Registration & Research
Samoyed Club of Victoria puppy buyers suggests a list questions which we encourage you to have a look at, their web site is aimed to assist puppy buyers know what to ask to ensure they are fully informed before getting a puppy and picking a kennel. We have included the link to these questions and other useful links on their web site to help you understand what is involved in getting a puppy. We have included below the questions in this link – and our responses.
All puppies are registered with Dogs Queensland (Dogs Australia / ANKC registration) and transferred into your name upon purchase.
About you
To help us match you with a possible puppy, we would like to know a little bit about you and your knowledge of the breed. These also include the Samoyed Club recommended questions that a breeder should ask you. Please respond to these questions via this questionnaire to Express an Interest in a DeeJae puppy (or older Samoyed)
Questions you should ask the breeder (as reommended by the Samoyed Club)
How long have you been involved with and or breeding Samoyeds?
Since 1985 – started showing 1986 & breeding 1989. There has virtually always been a Samoyed in our life.
How old is the Sire and Dam?
This varies for each litter and will be advised to perspective families once we have a litter. We can confirm age of both parents will be within the ages set in place by Dogs Queensland regulations.
Have both the sire and dam had their eyes examined by a veterinary ophthalmologist? Including a gonioscopy to confirm eye angles?
Yes – Eye tests are completed on all our dogs and renewed annually to ensure they maintain certification. Puppies will also have their initial eye test prior to moving to their new homes.
If yes, what were the results? (NB Bad drainage angles could result in a dog developing Glaucoma. Primary Glaucoma is an inherited condition and occurs in many breeds of dogs and therefore it is important that the parents have had an eye exam and received a pass).
We ensure both parents are eye tested as recommended by the Samoyed Club with results published on the Orchid database (http://orchid.ankc.org.au/) which is a public register. We do not breed with any dogs who do not have appropriate results.
Are both the sire and dam hip and elbow X-rayed and scored for hip and elbow dysplasia?
Yes, this is done on all dogs who we use in our breeding program. Results are available to all puppy families and are publicly available on the Orchid database.
If yes, What were their results?
As we don’t have a specific litter planned, unable to provide actual results until the dire / dam are selected. The details will be provided on your puppy documentation, or you can ask us ahead of time once we have a litter due. Additionally, the results are available on the Orchid database.
Will a copy of the eye and hip/elbow certificates be available, prior to paying a deposit or collecting the puppy?
Yes - available on request. Available on the Orchid database which is a public register which tracks all vet results for registered dogs. A copy of these results for parents and pups are also provided in your puppy packs.
Do you perform bile acid tests on your puppies before they go to their new homes? (A bile acid test is a liver function test and is recommended not be done prior to 8 weeks of age)
Yes – this will be completed by their vet at 7-8 weeks of age. Copies of results will be provided in their puppy pack if available – if not will be emailed when received. As this test is recommended to be performed at 8 weeks and results take up to 5 days the results may not be in your puppy pack on the day you pick up your puppy.
What health tests do you do on your puppies? Do you provide a copy of all the puppy’s health results? (This could include vet examination, vaccination card, bile acid test results and or puppy eye exams)
Puppy will undergo full vet checks throughout their 8-10 weeks with us and a final examination and health certificate by vet within 2 days of pick up.
Vaccinated (1st vaccine) and wormed every 2 weeks.
Bile acid tests and eye exams will also be completed.
DNA tests will be completed on each puppy as per Dogs Qld requirements to confirm parentage.
We encourage you to also have a vet check completed yourself once you pick up puppy for your own peace of mind.
Full vet records for you puppy will be included in your puppy pack.
Do you as a breeder offer a guarantee and what does it cover?
Dogs Queensland and the Samoyed Club of Victoria have recommendations and expectations that breeders are always available to puppy buyers – we are fully supportive of this arrangement.
Puppies are guaranteed for all tested health matters and for healthy delivery to their new home for the recommended 3 days, this is when your free pet insurance kicks in. Having said that, we are always here to help and support should it be needed. If for any reason in the future your circumstances change, we will work with you to find a suitable home for your puppy.
We encourage you to take out pet insurance on your new pup. A complementally 6 week policy is provided with each pup to get your started and give you time to research and source a provider who suits you. While many tests are undertaken on both puppies and parents (copies in your packs) there are times when medical conditions arise which could not be foreseen. While we do not anticipate any health concerns, if anything does arise it can be costly, by having pet insurance this will help mitigate vet costs which may influence your treatment decisions and allow you to focus on the best treatment for your pup, not the cost of the treatment (which can be a decision making factor).
Please also, if you have health concerns, make contact with us, we may be able to guide you, provide support and point you in the direction of a specialist. Occasionally general practice vets do not have the breed specialist knowledge of Samoyeds. Through our network of associates, we can often assist with 2nd opinions or guidance through your concerns. We are here to help.
Do you encourage prospective puppy buyers to visit your home and see your dogs?
Definitely – this will give you the opportunity to meet mum, dad (if he is one of our boys) and the other fluffies at DeeJae.
This may be the time for your puppy to pick you.
Do you belong to a Samoyed breed club i.e. Samoyed Club of Victoria Inc?
Yes – Samoyed Club of Victoria. The biggest Samoyed Club in Australia. There is currently no Samoyed Club in Queensland.
Does the puppy come with a puppy pack i.e. information on worming, feeding and vaccinations?
Yes – puppy comes with both information, and also some product to get you started such as food. All puppies come with 6 weeks pet insurance, Dogs Qld membership, Samoyed Club Victoria membership and much more. Once you have been reserved a puppy we will be able to provide a full list of product you will be provided in your DeeJae bag.
Are the puppies going to be registered with Dogs Victoria? Or the controlling body in your state i.e. Dogs NSW
Yes – They will be registered with Dogs Queensland. A member of Dogs Australia (ANKC - Australian National Kennel Control) and transferred into your name outright upon purchase.
At what age will you allow me to take the puppy home? (Vic Dogs and SCV Inc. code of ethics state that 8 weeks is the minimum age for pups to leave their litter mates and dam).
Recommendation is that puppies do not leave until they are 8-10 weeks of age – for many reasons, mainly vaccinations. We support this timeline, although you are welcome to come and spend time with your new baby often before they go home, this helps form a bond and assist with transition away from siblings.
If you are unable to visit in person (maybe interstate or international or just not convenient) we do have CCTV available to all our new families, this is on 24/7 and allows you to look in on your new puppy at any time – careful, we are told this can take over your life.
Will you allow me to pick my puppy or will you select which puppy I will be able to have?
No hard and fast rule in this area – as we are likely keeping a show puppy for ourselves, we will make this selection first. As someone wanting to add a puppy to their home, you will be able to identify which puppy you feel you bond and has the right personality to match you. Quite often the decision may not be made until the puppies are a couple of weeks old and their personalities begin to emerge.
Will the puppy be on full or limited registration? (Discuss with breeder what this means)
Any puppies sold for show will be on the mains register, all others usually on limited register – although this can be discussed on an individual basis.
Limited register puppies (Dogs Qld) will be unable to be: shown, exported & bred with.
If applicable… agreements on breeding and stud arrangements for the puppy in the future should be discussed and understood by both parties prior to collecting the puppy
We do not have any standard agreements or arrangements, all puppies are sold outright to their new families.
Does the breeder provide grooming tools and guidance of which items are required and recommended? (i.e. brush, comb, dog dryer, leads, shampoos etc.)
Yes –products will be included in your puppy pack. Some of these items will include brush / comb/ food / lead / toy and lots of other goodies. Will also provide information on other items which will assist you with Samoyed ownership.
How much will the puppy cost? / Is a deposit required? / What are the conditions if my position changes and I am unable to purchase the puppy?
Puppies are $4000. A deposit is not requested until you are reserved a puppy from the litter, at that time $500 is requested to confirm your commitment to progress. We do not take deposits until a litter is born and a puppy reserved.
If you commit to purchase, and are unable to continue, no problem, we understand circumstances change. No issue with refunding any deposit paid.
