This is a three-workshop series; we urge participation in the entire sequence.
Session 1: Opening the Door: Foundations (90 minutes) In this foundational workshop, we will discuss the language of race and racism, the origins of race, the history of race here at UR, and the position of our self in society. Participants will review contemporary language, and gain understanding of its importance as part of the struggle for equity and when discussing race and racism. Please select the date(s) you are available to attend:

Thursday, September 17 from 9:30 AM – 11:00 AM (EST)

Session 2: Managing the Anti-Racist Classroom (90 minutes) In this workshop, participants will explore what we bring to the classroom and how norms inform how we manage our classrooms and labs. This session will provide participants with strategies to identify and manage situations that may arise in the classroom or lab. Participants will learn about the ways in which our norms and implicit biases can lead to microaggressions and misunderstandings. Please select the date(s) you are available to attend:

Wednesday, September 30 from 12:00 PM – 1:30 PM (EST)
Thursday, October 1 from 9:30 AM – 11:00 AM (EST)

Sessions 3: The Faculty Ally in Action (120 minutes) In this highly interactive workshop, participants will engage with real-world applications of anti-racist concepts presented in previous sessions. Working through case studies together, participants will approach race-related scenarios that commonly arise for faculty in teaching and learning environments at Rochester. Through this process participants will gain skills that inform course design, syllabus creation, classroom discussions, student “call-outs,” and lab group dynamics. Prerequisite: workshop #1 or #2, attendance at both workshops #1 and #2 highly recommended. Please select the date(s) you are available to attend:
