The primary goal of the Special Topics Peer Mentors (STPM) in the GSMP is to provide academic and emotional support to the first-year graduate student mentees. We hire two STPMs, each one addressing a specific area: 1) Professional Communication & Early Career Development and 2) Mental Health & Wellness Resources. STPMs can also act as a mentor to peer mentors based on their area of expertise.
STPMs are not paired with individual mentees, and instead are responsible for reaching out to all GSMP mentees. STPMs plan and host skills-based workshops and provide a peer-based platform to support mentees during office hours. Workshops may consist of writing practice, presentations, special guests, etc. The STPMs are expected to have at least 1 hour of "office hours" per week. STPMs may also be asked to support the GSMP Coordinator with the GSMP program. Overall, STPMs are expected to work the same number of hours as peer mentors (average ~11 hrs/month).
