The Racehorse Reimagined program is an adoption program for transitioning racehorses of any breed or age. The grant pays trainer fees for work with transitioning racehorses either directly off the track, transitioning from a second performance career, retirement or rescue situations.
The horse is matched with an adopter before the training starts.
Training fees for this program are paid at $50 an hour and can be used for ground work, training under saddle or riding lessons.
The grant parameters are:
- The adopter is selected and matched with the horse before training begins.
- Adopters must be involved in a minimum of 50% of the training sessions either as an observer, participant or through discussions and feedback with trainer.
- Trainers will invoice This Old Horse for training hours. Training fees are paid at $50 an hour with a max of 10 hours ($500 per month) and the trainer and adopter must commit to a minimum of 60-days involvement. The maximum grant payment is $1,000.
- The adopter is the legal owner of eligible horses. The Trainer must have their own liability insurance. This Old Horse, members of the Racehorse Reimagined collaboration or the ASPCA will not be responsible for any accidents or injuries, property damage or any losses or liability incurred during the training period.
